Hymers College is a co-educational day school offering the very best for young people from the age of 3 to 18 years. The school combines outstanding academic teaching, supportive pastoral care, wide-ranging co-curricular activities and first-rate facilities.
Founded in 1893 by Reverend John Hymers, Fellow of St John’s College Cambridge and Rector of Brandesburton, the school was built ‘for the training of intelligence in whatever social rank of life it may be found among the vast and varied population of the town and port of Hull’. Whilst it started life as a boys school, Hymers College has been co-educational for the last 35 years and now welcomes pupils not only from across the city of Hull, but also East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire.
Number of Pupils. 1029. Hymers Hessle Mount (Pre-School, Reception, Years 1 and 2) has 91 pupils. The Junior School (Years 3 - 6) has 196 pupils aged 7 to 11 and offers a full range of academic, sporting, music and co-curricular activities. The Senior School has 568 pupils aged 12–16, whilst the Sixth Form has 174 pupils aged 16–18.
Admission is usually at Pre-School, Reception, Year 3, Year 7 or Year 11. Places may also be available in other year groups.
For applications from Year 3, pupils must sit an entrance assessment. Once a child has joined the school, there is no assessment to move from Hymers Hessle Mount to Junior School, or from the Junior School to the Senior School.
Almost all pupils qualify for the Sixth Form through GCSE results. Pupils from other schools are admitted to the Sixth Form on the basis of good GCSE results, an interview with the Headmaster and a computer-based assessment.
Pupils are prepared for GCSEs through a broad curriculum including music, business-related subjects, computer science, technology and the arts.
There is a full range of courses leading to A Level examinations, and special preparation is given for Oxford and Cambridge entrance, as well as for medicine, dentistry and veterinary science.
Facilities. Across two stunning campuses – Hymers Hessle Mount in Hessle and Hymers College in Hull – the school offers a range of dedicated facilities to children to explore, play, discover and grow. These include specialist laboratories, a 200-seater theatre, and Art and Design Technology Centre. There is a specialist Music Centre providing a full range of music facilities including a recital hall, rehearsal and music technology rooms, and a recording studio. The Learning Resources Centre houses a café, library, study areas and break out rooms.
In recent years the school has refurbished many science laboratories as well as the Sixth Form Common Room and Reception areas.
All Senior School pupils are issued with a Chromebook and there are class sets of digital devices to enhance the learning of younger pupils.
The grounds include a recently upgraded all-weather astro pitch, tennis and netball courts, rugby and cricket pitches, a swimming pool and a gym.
Co-curricular Activities. Hymers College offers over 100 co-curricular clubs and activities. These include British Sign Language, water polo, chess, Law Society, debating and Time Capsule Club. Pupils are strongly encouraged to participate, with a longer lunch break allowing adequate time for pupils to do this.
The main school games are rugby, cricket, hockey, netball, tennis and athletics. The school regularly competes at national level and provides members of county and national teams.
Many pupils take part in The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme and Hymers is the only independent school to host the National Citizen Service (NCS), which encourages a huge amount of community engagement that has led to a national award.
Drama is particularly strong, with several productions a year, and Music is a major school activity, from full orchestras to choir and chamber groups in each part of the school. Individual tuition is available in most instruments.
Fees per term (2024–2025). Senior School and Sixth Form: Year 7+ £4,971; Junior School: Year 5 & 6 £4,370, Year 3 & 4 £4,134; Hymers Hessle Mount: Year 1 & 2 £3,204, Reception £2,031-£2,860 (depending on EYFS funding), Pre-School £9.97 per hour.
