Our award-winning, purpose-built Junior School on the same North Road site as the Senior School is extremely well equipped for learning, with dedicated specialist teaching rooms for Science, Art, Design Technology and Music and a state-of-the-art ICT Suite and Technology Centre, all housed around a lovely central library. The School also includes a large multi-purpose hall and dining room.
Externally, the Junior School has its own adventure playground, dipping ponds, wildflower garden, multi-sport play area, an astro, Activity Trail, as well as access to the Meadow, a delightful and spacious area with beautiful views over Bath.
The Junior School is an integral part of the King Edward’s foundation and is governed by the same Board. It joins with the Senior School in major events, such as the Founder’s Day Service in Bath Abbey, and shares various games facilities and specialist teaching staff.
All children learn the strings (violin, viola, cello and double bass) in Year 3, recorder in Year 4, whole class orchestra/band and Gamelan in Year 5 and Steel Pans in Year 6. Well over half of the children learn additional instruments under the tutelage of a strong peripatetic music team. A mixture of French, German and Spanish is taught throughout the School while purpose-built facilities in Art, Science, Technology and IT, coupled with specialist teaching, ensure high standards of achievement in those areas. The School is a very busy one renowned for its co-curricular programme. The wide variety of activities on offer include table tennis, gymnastics, fencing, judo, chess, dance, Eco Club and Crafty Club. This is not to mention the various musical and instrumental groups and the many opportunities to play rugby, football, hockey, netball, cricket, tennis, cross country and athletics. Frequent educational trips are arranged in and around the local area and during the summer Activities Week; residential trips for Years 3–6, include destinations such as France and Devon. Sporting tours also take place each year.
The House system plays a central role in the life of the School. All children belong to one of four Houses and take part in many events and competitions during the year.
