Founded in 1969, Twickenham Prep is an independent, co-educational school situated in Hampton. We are a happy, vibrant, and thriving school where every child is valued as an individual and inspired to achieve their full potential, personally, socially and academically. The pupils benefit from small classes, first-class facilities, specialist subject teaching and excellent pastoral care.
Our pupils achieve great success, both academic and extracurricular, moving on to excellent independent secondary schools with regular academic, sporting, musical, art and all-rounder scholarships. We are committed to working in partnership with our parents so that our pupils leave TPS as well-rounded individuals. All pupils sit their secondary entrance exams in Year 6, with offers made to girls for Year 7 entry and for boys, the possibilities of a Year 7 or Year 9 entry. The majority of boys stay on at TPS Senior Prep which allows them to access our robust KS3 provision alongside the Pre-Senior Baccalaureate (PSB) framework, which has a core skills focus and is designed to be in tune with the requirements of the 21st century workplace. PSB allows us to maintain high academic standards through a knowledge-rich curriculum, alongside the explicit teachings of key skills that pupils need to be lifelong learners.
Our Pre-Prep and Prep curriculum is based on the National Curriculum with specialist teaching of PE, Games, ICT, French, Music and Think Tank (formerly Mind Lab, an innovative thinking skills programme) from Reception, ensuring a balanced educational experience. Art/Design and Technology is introduced in Year 3 and, from Year 4, pupils have specialist teaching in all subjects, with Latin being introduced in Year 5. Class sizes are no more than 20, developing each pupil to their full academic potential and promoting high academic standards. The school is well equipped to cover the full range of subjects, with purpose-built Art/DT, Science and Music facilities and a modern sports hall used for PE and termly productions.
Strong emphasis is placed on participation by all in sporting, musical and extracurricular activities. The school plays a wide range of sports and has recently formed an affiliation with Kempton Cricket Club to provide 10 acres of dedicated sporting facilities for rugby, football, cricket and athletics. The girls also play netball, hockey and cricket, with athletics and swimming also part of the sporting curriculum. Music and drama play a large part in the school with full-scale productions and concerts annually involving all pupils. There is a school choir and individual instrumental lessons are taught by visiting specialists.
Pupils from Year 3 upwards have the opportunity to take part in yearly residential trips to PGL, France and Pembrokeshire alongside day trips to historic and curriculum-enhancing venues. There are also many extracurricular clubs during and after school to choose from, including coding, LAMDA, chess, DT, Music technology and many sports options. We have also introduced Junior Duke, a younger version of the Duke of Edinburgh Award, which teaches the children key life skills, from first aid to bicycle repairs, car washing and website design.
Conscious of the needs of working families we provide on-site wraparound care from 7.30am to 6.30pm and offer morning minibus services to children living in Richmond, Twickenham, Teddington, St Margaret’s, Hampton Wick, Feltham, Sunbury, Thames Ditton and East Molesey.
Following the recent renovation of our new premises, ‘The Hub’, located at 51 High Street in Hampton, we are excited to have launched the TPS radio station. This new facility complements our Digital Media Suite which includes broadcast cameras and an editing suite. These state-of-the-art facilities provide excellent opportunities for children to develop their AV skills through recording and podcasts and short films, alongside broadcasting live radio shows.
Following our recent inspection carried out by the Independent Schools Inspectorate, we were delighted with the results. We achieved the highest rating of ‘Excellent’ in both categories of the educational quality aspect: ‘Pupils’ Academics and Other Achievements’ and ‘Pupils’ Personal Development’. This impressive result is testament to the hard work and dedication of the whole TPS community, including staff, governors, pupils and our families.
Entry to the school is non-selective at Reception with limited places available in other year groups subject to an assessment.
Regular Open Days are held and personal tours are available – the pupils and Headmaster would be delighted to show you around. Please contact the school office.
