St Michael’s combines great learning and excellent pastoral care as part of a well-rounded education. The school has a traditional approach to learning, which does not mean it lives in the past, but places emphasis on the importance of hard work and homework in the school curriculum. The high academic standards of the school are reflected in the National League Tables.
In 2024, St. Michael’s School’s A level results saw them ranked third in the UK in both The Sunday Times and The Telegraph’s league tables. The results were the highest in the school’s one hundred year history and saw 86.8% of all grades achieved being either an A* or A. In the same year, the school was also named The UK’s No.1 Best Value Independent School by The Daily Telegraph.
In 2021, St Michael’s was the recipient of the Sunday Times Wales Independent Secondary School of the Decade award. Previous accolades have included the 2019 Sunday Times Welsh Independent Secondary School award and in 2017, the school was ranked a Top 20 school in The Times Top 100 Co-Educational Schools in the UK. In the same year, St Michael’s was also named top school in Wales for GCSE results.
No school can build up such a strong reputation without a competitive, but well-disciplined atmosphere and a highly qualified and dedicated staff. This is where we feel St Michael’s is particularly fortunate.
Our boarding houses are excellent: Parc House for Years 9 & 10 is a handsome and historic mansion set in an acre of grounds in the village of Llangennech nearby and Tenby House is a purpose-built, on-site, state-of-the-art, 31-bedroom boarding house for those in Years 11 to 13. Both houses offer a high standard of comfort where every pupil feels safe, happy and protected. Pupils are accommodated in well-furnished and equipped, single en-suite or shared study-bedrooms. The houses provide spacious recreation rooms and pleasant grounds in which pupils may relax, play or watch TV.
We have well-equipped computer laboratories where pupils have access to a computer each from 3 years of age. Languages taught in the school are French, Spanish, Welsh and Chinese (Mandarin).
The school has an envied reputation for its academic achievement but is also proud of the wide range of traditional games and activities it offers. Pupils from Year 10 onwards pupils can also take part in The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme to Gold Award standard. We have a large choir and school orchestra and pupils may take music examinations at GCSE and A level.
One of the main reasons behind the school’s success is the thorough grounding that pupils receive in the ‘basics’ – English, Mathematics, IT/Computing and Science in the Prep and Pre-Prep Schools, continuing into the Senior School.
We have enjoyed outstanding sporting success over the last few years in netball, rugby, football, tennis, cricket and athletics.
Every pupil is encouraged to develop their full potential whether in academic work or in all the extracurricular activities on offer.
