Founded by Dean Butler in 1872. Formerly at Lancaster Gate. Established in Gerrards Cross in 1937 as an Independent Day School catering for 400 day girls aged 3–18.
The School is situated in the attractive residential area of Gerrards Cross which is surrounded by beautiful countryside, 20 miles from London, close to the M25 and A40/M40, on the main bus routes, and 10 minutes from the railway station.
The aim. St Mary’s is committed to providing an excellent education in a caring, happy environment, where each girl develops self-confidence and achieves her very full potential. Students are actively encouraged to develop their own talents and personalities in a nurturing and purposeful environment to allow them to go on to become fulfilled, successful and empowered adults.
Curriculum. Subjects offered include English Language and Literature, History, Geography, RE, Drama, French, German, Spanish, Business Studies, Economics, Information Technology, Computer Science, Mathematics, Psychology, Sociology, Politics, Textiles, Dance, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Music, Art & Design, History of Art, Media Studies, Food & Nutrition, Extended Project Qualification, Equestrian Team, Gymnastics, Hockey, Netball, Tennis, Rounders, Football, Badminton, Swimming, Personal, Social, Cultural and Health Education, climbing, and other sporting activities.
Regular trips are made to places of educational interest; for team-building field courses are undertaken, foreign visits including a ski trip to Canada are arranged, international sports tours, and there is highly successful participation in The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme, World Challenge and Young Enterprise. There is an excellent staff to pupil ratio.
Examinations. Girls are prepared for Entrance to the Universities and Colleges in all subjects; for the General Certificate of Education at A level and GCSE/IGCSE level; Associated Board Examinations in Music and examinations in Speech and Drama (LAMDA). The School is an 11+ centre.
The buildings are a highly attractive mixture of old and new and include two Libraries, Dining Hall, a Science Block with Laboratories, a large open-plan Art Studio, a Home Economics Room, Textiles Room, two Computer Suites, a modern Sixth Form Centre, Cedar House which opened in 2016, two Music Rooms, Drama Studio, Chapel and two Assembly Halls/Gymnasiums equipped to the highest standards. Cherry Tree House, a new classroom block with state-of-the-art technology, opened in 2018.
The Prep Department, in the grounds of the Senior School, comprises Little St Mary’s, a new build opened in 2020 for Nursery and Reception girls, Paddington House, and two modern purpose-built blocks, with a Science Laboratory, Hall, Gymnasium, Textiles/Art room and ICT suite.
The grounds include tennis and netball courts, a hockey pitch and an athletics field. There is a Sport England full-size Sports Hall and an all new Multi-use Games Area with a space for spectators.
School hours. The hours are 8.30 am–3.45 pm. The School year is divided into 3 terms. Wraparound care is provided from 7.45 am and after school until 6.00 pm – the cost of this is included in the fees.
Reports are sent to Parents at half terms and at the end of each term and there are regular Parent/Staff meetings. The School also communicates with Parents via SchoolPost on Firefly.
Fees per term (2024-2025). £2,600–£7,350.
Scholarships and bursaries. Academic scholarships are available at 11+ and at 16+ in the Sixth Form. There are also Art, Drama, Music and Sports Scholarships at 11+ and Sports and Expressive Arts at 16+. A means-tested bursary scheme is in operation.
Charitable status. St Mary’s School (Gerrards Cross) Limited is a Registered Charity, number 310634. It provides education for girls from Early Years to A level in a well-structured, academic and caring environment.
