St Andrew’s is positioned within 12 acres of beautifully tended grounds at the foot of the South Downs and is just a five-minute walk to the beach. The school, founded in 1877, has a highly qualified teaching staff and children are taught in classes with a maximum size of 20 and an average number of approximately 16. A number of children in the Prep department are boarders and the school operates a popular scheme of flexi boarding allowing day children to stay any number of nights during the week on a flexible basis.
The Head is supported by the Deputy Head and a strong management team. All children in the school have a Form Teacher or Form Tutor who is responsible for their pastoral welfare and academic progress. Each section of the school has its own Head (Nursery and Pre-Prep, Junior, Middle and Senior) who coordinates, together with the Deputy Head and Pastoral Heads, the overall pastoral and academic work of the staff.
In addition to the expanse of playing fields, St Andrew’s benefits from its newly refurbished netball and tennis courts and a new state-of-the-art sports hall and dance studio, which was opened by Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson in September 2016, to provide excellent sporting provision for its pupils. During summer 2018, the boarding house was also refurbished together with the Pavilion which now forms a superb space for hosting events and presentations as well as a Senior Common room for pupils in Years 7 and 8.
There are three computer/iPad suites equipped with up-to-date software and hardware including a wireless network connection. There is an interactive whiteboard in every classroom. The equipment in the Pre-Prep suite is designed specifically for children from 3 to 7 years of age.
Other facilities include a modern purpose-built music block, an extensively equipped research and resource centre, a chapel, a Woodland Classroom and a creative arts centre with an art studio and design and technology facilities. The school strongly encourages music and drama and more than three quarters of the children play instruments and participate in orchestras, bands and choirs.
As well as music, drama is a timetabled subject and plays take place every term.
From the age of nine, children are taught by subject specialists. French is taught from the age of 5 and Latin is introduced from the age of 9. Children are introduced to working on computers from the age of two. The breadth of the curriculum means that, while the requirements of the National Curriculum are fulfilled, the children are able to experience a variety of other stimulating activities.
Accelerated sets exist from Year 5 to provide more challenging opportunities for those who are academically gifted. Academic, art, drama, music, and sports awards have been achieved to many major senior schools and, over the past five years, almost 140 scholarships have been won by St Andrew’s pupils. The charity running St Andrew’s Prep amalgamated with Eastbourne College in 2010 and the two schools are part of the Eastbourne College Incorporated Charity. The school benefits from the use of College facilities including an indoor touch pad swimming pool, astroturf pitches, a contemporary performing arts centre and specialist staff. Approximately 65–70% of St Andrew’s Prep leavers each year progress to Eastbourne College. However, it should be noted that although the schools are interdependent, they are also independent of each other and the Headmaster of St Andrew’s advises on any number of other schools too, as appropriate to each individual.
There is a wide range of activities on offer. The extracurricular programme, which runs for children in Years 5 to 8, offers opportunities for all children to develop areas of interest and strength or to discover new ones. Each activity offered has its own educational objectives and challenges designed to improve children’s skills and broaden their horizons. Optional Saturday morning activities for Years 4 to 8 pupils are also very popular. An extensive programme of after-school activities has always been a strong feature of St Andrew’s. This starts at the Pre-Prep and runs through to Year 8.
The school’s strong sporting reputation manifests itself in national honours regularly achieved in many different sports. Specialist coaches are employed to teach the skills required for all to enjoy participating in team games and opportunities are available to anyone wishing to represent the school.
Charitable status. Eastbourne College Incorporated is a Registered Charity, number 307071. The aim of the Charity is the promotion of Education.
