Parents often tell us they seek an environment that is stimulating, challenging and which helps their child recognise and share their individuality, interests and talents. It should be safe, warm and kind, balancing aspirations and expectations with a holistic approach. Like all excellent schools, we prize academic effort and resultant achievement, but we also value community, laughter, fun and the development of personal qualities just as much. We want your child to be happy at Nottingham High Infant & Junior School; your child will feel recognised, appreciated, respected and valued. We will foster your child’s confidence to learn, be curious, make friends and relish new opportunities, and we will support them as they grow and develop, academically and as people personally.
The verdict of our recent ‘Good Schools Guide’ independent reviewer was that ours is ‘a happy school that stands out for championing individual talents and gets these boys and girls good and ready for the more academic senior school’.
The Junior School is housed in purpose-built premises on the main school site, having its own classrooms, ICT suite, library, Art room, science laboratory, outdoor play area, and more.
Entrance Assessments are held in January, based around the core subjects of Mathematics and English, including reading, along with some measures of general ability. The tests are all set at National Curriculum ability levels appropriate for each age group.
The Junior School has an experienced and well-qualified staff. The curriculum is designed for those who expect to complete their education at Nottingham High School. The subjects taught are English, Mathematics, History, Geography, Science, Languages and PSHE. Full provision is made for Music, Art, Design Technology, Information Communication Technology, Swimming, Physical Education and Games.
The Junior School has its own orchestra and about 100 pupils receive instrumental tuition. All Year 3 pupils play an instrument of their choice. A concert and school plays are performed annually. A wide range of supervised activities and hobbies takes place during every lunch time.
School games are Football, Netball and Rugby with some Hockey and Cross Country in the winter, Cricket and Tennis in the summer.
Lovell House Infant School opened in September 2008 for children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2. Lovell House is situated across the road from the main High School in its own secure and self-contained grounds. The school features state-of-the-art classrooms and facilities, and extensive play areas, all in a friendly, home-from-home surrounding. In fact, the main school building is very much like a large house, making the transition between nursery and the early stages of a formal school education so much easier.
Classes are deliberately kept small (a maximum class size of 18), so that our teachers are able to devote time to the children as individuals. The majority of subjects are taught by class teachers, although specialist teachers are used for ICT, Swimming, Music and languages. All subjects are taught in an integrated curriculum to allow time for play and problem-solving activities to take place.
Beyond the classroom we offer an excellent range of extracurricular activities, giving real breadth to our curriculum. We make full use of some of the Nottingham High School facilities, such as the swimming pool, the extensive games fields and both the music and drama facilities. Thus while Lovell House is largely self-contained, we are also able to use the High School's wider facilities to expand the horizons of the children in our care.
Entry to Lovell House is by assessment; the admissions process is designed to assess the numeracy and literacy skills of the children applying for a place in Years 1 and 2, and a range of activities are used to assess school readiness and the potential for learning for those applying for a place in Reception. In addition, all children are invited to school for a final classroom-based assessment where they are observed completing practical activities.
As part of Nottingham High School, Lovell House not only benefits from the continuity of education and community from entry at age 4 right through to A level at age 18, but also from the extensive recreational and cultural facilities provided by the High School.
Charitable status. Nottingham High School is a Registered Charity, number 1104251. It exists to provide education for boys and girls between the ages of 4 and 18 years.
