One of the UK’s highest achieving schools, Moreton Hall was founded in 1913 by Ellen Lloyd-Williams (Aunt Lil) in Oswestry and moved to its present location in 1920. In 1964, the school became an educational trust. Although the school is predominantly boarding, a number of day pupils are admitted each year.

Admission. Moreton Hall Prep is the preparatory school of Moreton Hall, sharing not only its extensive facilities but also a commitment to nurture and celebrate the talents of each child. Moreton Hall Prep takes girls and boys from Pre-Prep (age 3) to Year 6 and offers a unique start to their education, ensuring academic rigour goes hand in hand with encouragement to achieve success in all creative and sporting fields.
Girls and boys are admitted to Moreton Hall, normally in September at age 11 by the School’s entrance examination which is held at the end of January each year. This examination requires no knowledge of foreign languages and is designed to test potential ability rather than factual recall. This examination can be taken by pupils at 10+, with supplementary papers at 12 and 13. Sixth Form entrance is by entrance examination, current school report and interview, and numbers are limited. All applications should be addressed to the Principal.
Though predominantly boarding, day pupils are welcomed. Boys may board from the age of 8–13.
Scholarships and bursaries. A number of academic scholarships worth up to 20% of fees will be awarded to pupils at ages 11+, 12+, 13+ and 16+. Scholarships for Music, Drama, Art and for outstanding Sporting talent are also available. Pupils may apply for more than one scholarship. Means-tested bursaries may be awarded up to the value of 100% of fees.
Fees per term (2024-2025). Boarders: £8,875 (Moreton Hall Prep), £11,823 (Years 7 and 8), £12,933 (Year 9) , £13,411 (Years 10–13). Day pupils: £3,968–£5,635 (Moreton Hall Prep), £7,225 (Years 7 and 8), £8,495-£8,973 (Years 9–13).
Curriculum. Going well beyond the National Curriculum, some 20 subjects are available at GCSE, varying from traditional academic subjects such as Latin and the Sciences, to practical subjects such as Drama, Dance and Physical Education. Modern Languages available include French, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese and Russian. A Levels in History of Art, Social Biology, Business Studies and Theatre Studies extend the range of the curriculum. Information Technology is a compulsory subject up to Sixth Form, optional thereafter.
Examinations offered. GCSE, A Level, ABRSM, ESB (English Speaking Board). Over 95% of Upper Sixth go on to University.
Religious activities. Non-denominational. Weekday service, longer service on Sunday, visiting preacher.
Academic, sporting and extracurricular facilities. Moreton Hall is engaged in an ambitious development programme and has facilities of the highest quality designed to provide the right environment for the education of pupils in the twenty-first century.
Younger pupils are housed in the Stables building under the supervision of resident houseparents and assistants. The building is designed to create a family atmosphere with dormitories split into smaller units, close to common rooms, washrooms and staff accommodation.
As pupils progress up the school, the dormitories are gradually replaced by double and finally single study-bedrooms. The Sixth Form Houses provide single and double en-suite facilities. Here, within the structure of a boarding school, senior girls are given the necessary freedom to prepare for the next stage in their careers.
The Centenary Science Centre is a unique Medical Science Faculty. The Science Centre, Information Technology rooms and Art and Design Centre are housed within a short distance of the central classroom, careers and library complexes.
All classrooms, libraries and boarding houses are networked and all Sixth Formers have internet access from their study-bedrooms.
An exceptionally well-equipped Sports Centre comprising a sports hall and floodlit tennis courts along with a heated indoor swimming pool, nine-hole golf course, an all-weather surface, and playing fields are set in one hundred acres of beautiful parkland at the foot of the Berwyn hills. The school offers a wide range of sporting options including Lacrosse, Netball, Hockey, Cricket, Tennis and Athletics. Sailing and Riding are also popular.
The Holroyd Community Theatre, Musgrave Theatre, Outdoor Theatre and Music School stimulate theatrical and musical activities ranging from house plays, lunchtime shows and jazz evenings through to ambitious school plays and orchestral concerts. Great emphasis is placed on girls taking part in as wide a range of extra-curricular interests as possible.
The nationally acclaimed Moreton Enterprises offers students real business experience. Supervised by professional advisers, but all run by the students themselves.
