Lichfield Cathedral School is an outstanding co-educational day school for children aged 2 to 18. Our mission is to be an internationally recognised school that serves its local area by creating an inclusive school community devoted to Christian ideals of learning, faith, leadership and service, raising the aspirations of each of its members and fulfilling their potential in body, mind and spirit.
The ethos of the school is that of a community where Christian values are upheld and, while most pupils are members of the Church of England, children of other denominations and religions are welcomed.
The school occupies two main sites: the Junior Years are located 3½ miles north of Lichfield city centre in six acres of countryside at Longdon Green, while the Middle and Senior Years occupy several buildings in the Cathedral Close, one being the magnificent 17th century Palace, the home of the Bishops of Lichfield until 1952.
The link with the Cathedral remains strong with a twice-weekly school service, as well as concerts and services throughout the year. The boy and girl choristers (aged 7–13) are supported by scholarships provided by the Cathedral Chapter and the School. Former choristers continue their choral training in Cantorum, the scholarship-based chamber choir and Sixth Form Choral Scholars rejoin the Cathedral Choir to sing with the Lay Vicars Choral. Academic, art, drama, sport and music scholarships are available to internal and external students entering Year 7 and Sixth Form.
Learning in the Early Years Foundation Stage is planned around half-termly topics and the children take part in a range of activities which are balanced between adult-led and child-initiated opportunities. Activities are carefully structured to challenge children, encouraging them to develop confidence and the skills needed to solve problems. The outdoor facilities offer children an exciting environment in which to explore and investigate, and we ensure children have the time for free play.
Forest School is a popular element of the curriculum up to Year 9 that provides a holistic, individualised approach to outdoor learning, with a strong focus on developing self-esteem, confidence, resilience, communication skills and social and emotional awareness.
The spirit of intellectual enquiry is at the heart of teaching and learning at the school. Academic results are strong, particularly at GCSE and A level. Throughout Key Stages 1 to 3, pupils follow a broad and balanced curriculum of English, Mathematics, Science, Computing, French, Spanish, German, Latin, History, Geography, Religious Studies, Art, Design, Music, Drama, Physical Education & Games and Personal, Social & Health Education. ICT skills are developed across every subject.
We offer a wide range of GCSE subjects, including Art and Design, Biology, Business Studies, Chemistry, Computer Science, Design Technology, Drama, English Literature, English Language, French, Geography, German, History, Mathematics, Music, Music Technology, Physical Education, Physics, Product Design, Religious Studies, Spanish and Travel & Tourism. The same subjects are offered for Sixth Form in a mixture of A levels and BTECs, with the addition of Criminology, Economics, Further Mathematics, Government & Politics, Law, Philosophy, Ethics & Theology, Psychology and Drama & Theatre. In 2024, the Sixth Form placed in the top 10% of schools in the country for value-added.
A co-curriculum of activities ensures students are well rounded and gain valuable skills for higher education, employment and life beyond school. Extracurricular activities every day after school cover a wide range of subjects, from chess to cooking and from Taekwondo to tennis. Several orchestras and ensembles are extremely active, as are the five main school choirs.
The unique, whole-school Ethical Leadership Programme helps pupils and students to develop both the life skills and the strength of character to make a positive contribution to the world and do what is right, because they know it to be so.
All pupils have access to a rich variety of residential and day trips as well as pupil exchanges, overseas expeditions and cultural immersion opportunities. Many are directly linked to the curriculum, but the benefits to pupils go far beyond the purely educational. The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme is thriving. Sixth Form students take part in overseas volunteer work through World Challenge.
Parents are welcome to contact the school for a tour and a meeting with the Headteacher or to attend any of the school Open Events held throughout the year.
Charitable status. Lichfield Cathedral School is a Registered Charity, number 1137481.
