Part of Oundle School, Laxton Junior School (LJS) is an independent day school with 250 children aged 4 to 11. The school prides itself in providing an innovative and progressive education of the very highest standard, offering each unique child the best possible start to a life of learning.
Fantastic teaching staff take the time to really understand every single child, what motivates and excites them, and how we can harness this to challenge them at just the right level in every lesson and in every activity. The school’s approach to staffing ensures children get the individual attention they need, building their confidence and resilience and allowing them to take risks and not to fear failure. The result is children who are inspired by the opportunities they have, who have the confidence to learn from mistakes and who ultimately develop real mastery of their subjects. In 2024, the school has launched a reimagined approach to curriculum delivery. Explore, Discover and Empower are the three interconnected stages of this new learning journey. Children are guided through the phases of a Preparatory education, from ‘Pre-Prep’ (Reception to Year Three) through to ‘Prep’ (Year Four to Six), all underpinned by the LJS ‘Golden Thread of Nurture’ with wellbeing and happiness being at the forefront of this approach. From Year Four, learning is delivered by Subject Specialist Teachers, mimicking the format of senior school.
Outdoor learning is part of daily life at LJS and its beautiful, bespoke-designed Woodland Garden is an intrinsic element of learning, whatever the weather. A tailor-made outdoor learning curriculum allows children to find out more about nature and living outdoors – including making fires, using tools and building dens – but teachers also use the many spaces to inspire children and energise lessons across the curriculum.
Five core values sit at the heart of an LJS education: care, a love of learning, opportunity, community and quality. These values are evident across everything the school does, ensuring pupils are equipped with the skills to thrive in all aspects of their future lives. LJS is proud of the high academic standards its children achieve, the vast majority moving up to Oundle School at the end of Year Six, but prouder still of the intellectually curious, open-minded, kind-hearted and well-rounded young people they become.
