Scholarships and Bursaries - Futher Details
Kingshott Scholars is a programme designed to recognise pupils with exemplary talents and skills in a variety of fields, and to then nurture and further develop those talents and skills during their time at the school.
Scholarships are awarded for Academic, Art, Drama, Music and Sports to pupils joining Year 7 and Year 9 who demonstrate a high level of ability or potential, combined with enthusiasm for their chosen field. Kingshott Scholars benefit from specific and targeted tutoring in their area of talent, alongside additional enrichment opportunities. Our scholarships are awarded on merit to the highest achievers in our Scholarship assessment which will take place in the January before joining in September.

All Kingshott pupils, from Nursery through to our Senior School, enjoy an educational journey of exploration, creativity, intellectual growth and skills development. Our community – which is focused on being caring and inclusive – encourages children to be confident and ambitious for themselves and each other. Going forward, we will be supporting and stretching children, from age 3 up to 16, to achieve their full potential at every stage of their educational journey, culminating in their GCSEs. At Kingshott we welcome every child’s unique character and approach to learning. There is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ education. At the core of every decision we make lies pupil development and happiness.
Our emphasis on a rounded education ensures our children experience the very best teaching available, whether it be through the academic subjects or our broad and comprehensive wider curriculum. This is complemented by a full and varied after-school programme (until 6.00 pm) which includes a wide variety of creative and sporting activities and hobbies. Breakfast Club and After-School Care is also available for all pupils.
Our first-class facilities are set within 23 acres of school grounds. The site is spacious, with separate spaces for all children of different ages. Nursery, Junior and Senior school pupils benefit from their own facilities in their own buildings, whilst also accessing and using other shared spaces across the site. These include our large multi-purpose sports and drama hall, our swimming pool and extensive sports pitches and grounds. There are also plenty of areas for our youngest children to enjoy playing, along with nature spaces for pupils to enjoy their outdoor learning classes.
New facilities have, and are, being developed for our move to offer GCSEs. These include a new Science centre, a student study space and improved Design Technology and dining facilities.
Admission. We are delighted to be expanding our ‘excellent’ ISI-rated education up to GCSE, with three additional year groups (Years 9, 10 and 11) being incrementally added to the School from September 2024 onwards. Current Kingshott pupils are now able to automatically move through to join our Senior School. New students, from Hitchin and across Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire, can join Kingshott in Year 7, 8 or 9, using our new shuttle bus transfer from Hitchin station.
Kingshott is open to pupils between the ages of 3 and 13 (rising to 16), irrespective of gender, race, religion, culture, sexual orientation or disability. Entry into Nursery is non-selective and most children move through into Reception. Early registration is encouraged, as waiting lists are in place for most year groups. Children joining us in our Reception classes are invited into Kingshott for an informal 'getting to know you' session, with their parents or guardians. Older year groups (including Year 7+ to join Kingshott for Senior School) is by an assessment which is appropriate to the child’s age. Year 7 and Year 9 Scholarships (Academic, Art, Drama, Music and Sport) are available.
Kingshott is conveniently situated on the outskirts of Hitchin, with plenty of convenient parking for busy parents. Families join Kingshott from across Hertfordshire and beyond – including Luton, Letchworth, Baldock, Stevenage and Welwyn. The A1(M) Motorway is within just two miles of the school.
Kingshott, founded in 1931, is proud to be part of the Mill Hill Education Group, having proactively joined this charitable collection of independent schools in May 2024. All schools within the group share an educational philosophy around developing thoughtful and responsible pupils with a global outlook. School life combines academic rigour with a breadth of opportunities to develop young people able to flourish in an ever-changing world.
Charitable status. Mill Hill Education Group is the trading name of The Mill Hill School Foundation, which is a Registered Charity, number 1064758.
