Hill House was founded in 1912 and occupies the site of the former RAF Officers’ Quarters of RAF Finningley. The school provides a seamless, fully co-educational day education from age 3 to 18, and aims to provide a top-class holistic education where extracurricular success and personal development stand alongside academic excellence.
Number of pupils. There are 800 pupils, with an equal number of boys and girls.
Education. Children enter the School at 3 years of age via Nursery where structured play and learning are the order of the day. As children progress through the School there is a gradual change to subject-based teaching in specialist rooms, in preparation for GCSEs at 16 and A Levels at 18. Upon leaving the Junior School, children enter a full house system for pastoral care. All main school subjects are offered, including individual Sciences, French, Spanish and Latin.
Facilities. The school is based in an historic building with new, purposely renovated classrooms. The site includes a large hall, dining room and theatre. In 2011, Hill House Sixth Form was launched, housed in its own new Sixth Form Centre, including classrooms, coffee shop and large common room. A new Music School contains practice rooms, a recording studio and a performing studio. 2013 saw the opening of the school’s sports grounds at Blaxton, where a new Sports' Pavilion opened in Lent 2023. In 2015, the blue AstroTurf Paver Hockey Pitch was opened, and in 2017 a new Dining Hall was created. In 2023, a new Pavilion was opened at Blaxton Sports Grounds.
Extracurricular activities. Music, Drama, Art and Sport play an important part in the life of the School. Throughout the year, over 100 academic, recreational, musical and sporting activities per week are also offered in extracurricular time. The major sports undertaken include rugby, netball, hockey, cricket, and tennis. There is a competitive fixture list including a number of overseas tours. There are four orchestras and five choirs within the school, who enjoy the newly built Music School. Drama productions and concerts are undertaken on a regular basis. Residential trips and sports tours are undertaken at most age levels.
The School day. School opens at 8.00 am, with lessons from 8.40 am to 4.00 pm. Activities run from 4.00 pm, and a before- and after-school club operates from 7.30 am and until 6.00 pm. The school operates a five-day week, with a full games afternoon for all ages above 7. There are some activities and fixtures at weekends. Sixth Formers also have an Enrichment Afternoon, where they spend time exploring university admissions and undertaking internships at local businesses, hospitals, etc.
