Gatehouse School is an Independent Co-educational School for girls and boys aged 3 to 11.
Founded by Phyllis Wallbank in May 1948 in the gatehouse of St Bartholomew – the Great Priory Church near Smithfield, London – the School was a pioneer of much that is now generally accepted in education. Gatehouse is based on the Wallbank plan whose guiding principle is that children of any race, colour, creed, background and intellect shall be accepted as pupils and work side by side without streaming or any kind of segregation, with the aim that each child shall get to know and love God, and develop their own uniqueness of personality, to enable them to appreciate the world and the world to appreciate them.
Gatehouse is now located in Sewardstone Road, close to Victoria Park, and continues to follow this philosophy.
The Nursery is accommodated in a self-contained building with an outdoor play area. Pupils follow a balanced curriculum of child-initiated and teacher-led activities.
Lower Juniors are taught most subjects by their own qualified teacher and assistant, but have French, PE, Drama and Music with a specialist teacher.
In Upper Juniors from the age of 7, teaching is by subject and is conducted by highly qualified specialist staff. This is a special feature of Gatehouse and from an early age, gives children contact with subject specialists, not available to many children until secondary school.
Gatehouse has a specialist Nurture teacher who delivers extended learning for those children exceeding their targets.
We send children to schools such as City of London Boys and Girls, Forest, Bancroft’s and Highgate, often with scholarships.
Charitable status. Gatehouse Educational Trust Limited is a Registered Charity, number 282558.
