The Thornton Scholarship
The examination for The Thornton Scholarship takes place in the Lent Term and is open to children who will be moving into Year 3 the following September.
This scholarship, offered by the school, may be up to a maximum of 50% of the school fees, although the actual percentage will depend upon the standard attained. Although the exam is open to all, it is set at scholarship level; we recommend only children attaining a standardised score of 120 (or equivalent) on a recognised formal assessment test be entered.
The tenure of the award will last as long as the child is at The Croft, provided there is no obvious negligence to his or her schoolwork. The percentage of the award will remain the same, whatever changes there are in the rate of inflation and school fees. Scholarship pupils are expected to pay the termly rate for school lunches.
Bursaries
Bursaries are available to children from 5 to 11 years of age, and will be based on the following criteria:
Financial need – as determined by a parental means testing assessment.
An interview and test of your child’s academic performance, followed by a report from your child’s current school.
If you require further information about bursaries, please contact Mr Barney Thornton at office@croftschool.co.uk or +44(0) 1789 293795.

Motto. Dulce et Forte
The Croft Preparatory School is a co-educational day school, for children from 2* to 11 years of age, situated on the outskirts of Stratford upon Avon. Founded in 1933, the school occupies a large rural site with superb facilities and extensive playing fields, offering children some of the most exciting educational opportunities in the area. There is also a nature conservation area with a lake.
A family-based school, The Croft provides specialist teaching in small groups, where good discipline and a wider knowledge of the world around us, both spiritual and geographical, is encouraged. Music, Sport and Drama each play an important part in the curriculum. The resulting high educational standards provide the all-round excellence which is at the heart of the school.
The scope of the grounds and facilities enable a wide range of activities and opportunities – sporting, creative and recreational. From the Sports Hall, swimming pool and games pitches, to the Music practice rooms, Performance Space, small arenas in the playgrounds and the 600-seat Theatre; the Croft Cabin and conservation area, to the imitation Motte and Bailey castle, Geology Museum and Train Shed. The opportunities are endless at The Croft.
The children are prepared for 11+ entry to the local Grammar Schools or Senior Independent Schools.
Entrance requirements. Children can be accepted in Little Crofters from the age of 2* years. Prospective pupils registered for Years 1–6, where a place is available, are invited into School for a taster day. They will spend a day in the classroom with their age group and be assessed by the Class Teacher. Parents provide a copy of their child’s latest school report and if deemed necessary, an assessment of literacy, numeracy, and sometimes other appropriate tests will be given by the SENDCo.
*Academic year of the child’s 3rd birthday.
