The Crescent School is an independent co-educational preparatory school for day pupils aged 4–11 years. It merged with the Princethorpe Foundation in September 2016, joining the other schools in the Foundation – Little Crackers Nursery, Crackley Hall School and Princethorpe College.
The school was founded in 1948, originally to provide a place of education for the young children of the masters of Rugby School. Over the years the school has steadily expanded, admitting children from Rugby and the surrounding area. In 1988, having outgrown its original premises, the school moved into modern, purpose-built accommodation in Bilton, about a mile to the south of Rugby town centre. The buildings provide large and bright teaching areas, with a separate annexe housing the Nursery and Reception classes. There are specialist rooms for Science, Art, Design Technology, ICT and the Performing Arts. In addition, there is also a spacious Library and Resource Area. The multipurpose hall provides a venue for daily assemblies, large-scale music-making, is fully equipped for physical education and has all the necessary equipment to turn it into a theatre for school productions. The school is surrounded by its own gardens, play areas and sports field.
The requirements of the National Curriculum are fully encompassed by the academic programme, and particular emphasis is placed on English and mathematics in the early years. All pupils receive specialist tuition in Information and Communication Technology, Music and Physical Education. Specialist teaching in other subjects is introduced as children move upwards through the school. Spanish is introduced in Reception, followed by French in Year 3. The pupils are prepared for the local 11+ examination for entry to maintained secondary schools, including local grammar schools, and specific entrance examinations also at 11+ for independent senior schools.
The performing arts are a particular strength of the school and lessons are given in speech and drama, singing, percussion, musical theory and appreciation, and recorder playing. Instrumental lessons (piano, brass, woodwind and strings) are offered as an optional extra. There is a school choir, orchestra, brass, string and wind ensembles and recorder groups.
Charitable status. The Princethorpe Foundation is a Registered Charity, number 1087124. It exists solely for the purpose of educating children.
