Brighton College Prep School is a co-educational school, which offers a broad curriculum taught to high standards by dedicated and energetic staff. The Pre-Prep cares for children from Nursery to Year 3 in a purpose-built building with playing fields, overlooking the sea. Years 4 to 8 are housed on their own site situated adjacent to the College. Both sites are urban but enjoy close proximity to the sea, the South Downs and the vibrant sports and culture of Brighton, where an annual arts festival is held in May. Some of the excellent facilities provided by Brighton College are shared, including the College Chapel, the School of Science and Sport, playing fields, a purpose-built Recital Hall and the Great Hall.
From Reception, our children benefit from specialist lessons in art, music, French, Mandarin, library, PE, games and swimming on its own well-equipped site. From Year 4 upwards, specialist teaching is broadened to include design technology, LAMDA, our innovative HEALTH curriculum and Spanish and German.
Pastoral care is strong and a culture of kindness is commonplace and reinforced in assemblies, within the curriculum and during form time. The motto from Nursery to Year 8 is ‘Be Kind, Be Curious, Be Confident. Be the Best You’.
Academic standards are high and are one of the foundations upon which school life is built, along with the broad range of subjects taught. A variety of teaching methods is used – the key principle being that children enjoy their lessons and thus develop a love for learning.
Learning Support teachers can provide specialist teaching on a 1:1 basis or in small groups for pupils with an identified need.
Sport is a very important part of life at the school. The teaching of girls’ and boys’ games begins in Year 1 and includes netball, hockey, football, rugby, cricket, athletics and swimming.
The school is well known for its strength across the performing arts. Thirty-five visiting music teachers provide tuition for a large number of pupils who learn a wide variety of instruments. There are two orchestras, a concert band and three choirs organised by the music department.
Drama clubs and lessons are available from Year 3 and there are opportunities for children to perform during the academic year through assemblies, recitals, Chapel services and annual drama productions and musicals. The Brighton College School of Dance is thriving, and many pupils attend classes after school during the week and on Saturdays.
The school runs over 100 clubs and activities after school and at lunchtimes for pupils from Reception and there is a range of school bus routes for pupils from Year 4. Children attending Nursery can stay for optional, themed afternoons, including yoga, French and art.
The Admissions team hold regular events for prospective pupils and their families or can arrange individual visits. Open Mornings, taster days and themed mornings take place throughout the year, alongside taster and assessment days for pupils wishing to join the school.
