The school is located close to Blackheath village, overlooking the heath itself and borders of Greenwich Park. The five-acre site includes a large playing field, tennis and netball courts, two Forest Schools, Outdoor classrooms and two playgrounds, providing enviable sporting opportunities and room for children to play.
A well-equipped learning environment includes specialist rooms for Science, ICT, Art, DT, Maths and Music. A spacious multipurpose hall and music suite enhance the opportunities for Music, Drama, Sport and extracurricular activities. Over 70 clubs and activities are offered every week in a wide-ranging extracurricular programme.
Most children join the school in the Nursery at the age of three and progress through the Pre-Prep (4–7) and Prep (7–11) before leaving to transfer to selective senior schools. Academic standards are high and pupils are well prepared for selection at 11 and achieve consistent success in obtaining places at their first choice of grammar or independent senior school. On average over the last five years more than 50 per cent of Year 6 pupils have been awarded academic scholarships each year and scholarships in Art, Music, Drama and Sport.
The form teacher of every class is responsible for the pastoral welfare of each child, supported by a robust pastoral framework across the school. In the Nursery and the Pre-Prep the key worker and the form teacher are primarily responsible for teaching the children. However, there is a strong emphasis on specialist teaching from the very beginning. Music, French, PE, Drama and Dance are introduced in the Nursery. As the children progress through the school, specialist teachers are responsible for Art, ICT, Design Technology, Maths, English and Science. The quality of teaching is recognised as one of the many strengths of the school and pupils are encouraged to develop a sense of curiosity about the world around them and nurture a lifelong love of learning.
The school positively encourages parental involvement in the daily life of the school. The strong ethos and vision of the school, of kindness, curiosity, ambition and courage, are underpinned by the vibrant enthusiasm of all involved and by a strong sense of community.
