The College was founded by the Josephite Community in Croydon in 1869, and moved to its present 100 acres of beautiful grounds on Woburn Hill, Weybridge in 1884. Within its unique family-orientated ethos, the College seeks to encourage a wide, balanced Christian education in the Catholic tradition, encouraging excellence and achievement across a broad spectrum of academic, sporting and co-curricular activities. Almost all pupils move on to higher education, the vast majority gaining places at Russell Group universities, including Oxford and Cambridge. The College is co-educational throughout, and there are over 1,000 students.
Admissions. Entry is mainly at age 11 (First Year), with smaller cohorts at 13 (Third Year) and 16 (Sixth Form). Students are enrolled in September each year after successfully completing entrance examinations and interviews the previous winter. Entry is occasionally possible during an academic year.
Full details on the admissions process can be found on St George’s website or by contacting their Admissions team.
Entrance scholarships. Scholarships for Art, Music, Drama, Sport and Academic can be awarded on entry to the school at 11, 13 and 16 and carry a 10% remission of the basic school fees.
Scholarships in these areas can also be awarded at any point throughout a student’s time at the College. These are classed as ‘Honorary’ scholarships and do not carry any fee remission, but are identical in every other respect to scholarships awarded on entry.
Scholarships gift students a programme that develops and nurtures their talent, in addition to the College’s normal curriculum. The College’s scholarships programme very much underscores their mission for students to be the very best version of themselves.
There is no set number of scholarships awarded for each year group. Across the whole College, there will be well over 350 scholars at any one time.
Details on the process for application and guidance on expected standards are to be found on their website under the Admissions section. A certain number of scholarships are allocated to our Junior School candidates each year.
Bursaries. We offer fee remission of up to 110% for children at the College at 11+ and 16+. Remission may include additional assistance with uniforms, school bus, compulsory school lunches, essential academic trips and exam fees. Children undergo our normal entrance assessment and bursary applicants are also subject to a full financial assessment to measure eligibility. Please contact Admissions admissions@stgeorgesweybridge.com for non-standard entry applications.
Short-term financial assistance. The College provides short-term financial assistance for existing families who find themselves in difficult financial circumstances. Further information is available from the Bursar.
Facilities. St George’s College is embracing sustainability across its campus, and in spring 2022 was able to complete its Ground Source Heat Pump project to heat and cool much of the College.
The College’s world-class Activity Centre was built to mark their 150th anniversary in 2019, and offers an exceptional array of facilities for dynamic use. This ambitious building was designed to provide several flexible and varied environments to cater for many different types of activity, now and in the future. Spaces include a glassfloor in the main hall for multi-sport use, dance studio, climbing wall, mental performance studio, and a gym; all helping to inspire students to excel throughout their school life and beyond. In addition to the Activity Centre facilities, the College has 19 tennis courts, including three international standard grass courts, clay courts and an impressive four-court Indoor Tennis Centre. There are floodlit netball courts, an all-weather athletics track and two Astroturf hockey pitches. The College Boat Club is situated nearby on the Thames.
Our modern Sixth Form building provides group and silent study rooms, social space, five History and five Geography classrooms, staff offices and meeting areas.
Refurbishment over the past three years has provided modern facilities for Science, Music, Languages, English, Mathematics, Theatre and Technology.
There is an extensive Arts Centre, and an impressive Library.
The curriculum. This is kept as broad as possible up to GCSE, with a balance between Arts and Science subjects. Students usually take a maximum of 10 GCSEs, while A level candidates may choose from over 20 subjects. The vast majority of our Sixth Form students go on to Russell Group universities, including Oxford and Cambridge, and a number now go onto prestigious overseas universities.
Careers. Guidance is given throughout a student’s career at St George’s, but particularly while students are making GCSE, A level and university choices. The Careers Coordinator has a contemporary, well-stocked Careers Room and makes effective use of testing, portfolios, work experience, trial interviews, Challenge of Industry days and computer software to support students.
Art. The Art Department attracts large numbers of students at GCSE and A level who achieve consistently high results in their examinations. A large proportion of A level candidates successfully apply to Art Colleges, often each receiving several offers in this highly competitive field.
Music. Music plays a vital part in school life. There is a wide range of music-making encompassing early music, madrigal groups, jazz, rock, African Drumming as well as more traditional ensembles, orchestras and wind bands. The choir and orchestra give regular performances. Tuition is available on all orchestral instruments from a team of 36 visiting specialists who teach over 400 students each week. Students play in youth orchestras and have gained scholarships to the major conservatoires.
Responsibility and service. Many students engage in care for elderly people at home or in care homes, as well as those with disabilities. Groups of Sixth Form students accompany people with disabilities to Lourdes in the Easter and Summer terms, and for two weeks each Summer term, students from the Junior School and College take part in GO! (Georgian Outreach); an abundance of community projects that range from gardening and conservation to helping the elderly and local state schools. Students find these activities a rewarding exercise in Christian service. More recently, Sixth Form students have supported refugee children with online weekly tutoring to support their transition to British schools, and their BBC Award Winning Sixth Form Kennedy Club embraces providing hospitality and entertainment for displaced and refugee young people each Thursday evening.
There is a flourishing College Council, and the Prefect and Mentor system offer positions of responsibility to the oldest students.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme is offered at Bronze, Silver and Gold levels and all students are encouraged to take part.
Pastoral care. The spiritual, moral and academic wellbeing of the students is the concern of every member of staff at the College. Nearly all academic staff act as Group Tutors with particular responsibility for the daily care of their students and for forging links with parents.
St George’s is the only independent school of their size that allocates two tutors to each tutor group in the First Year. This allows far richer personal attention for the youngest students.
Each Year Group is led by a Head of Year, and the three Chaplains have a general pastoral role. All groups have a day of retreat away each year. The College also has six Houses to which the students are affiliated, and all students have one period per week as part of their PSE programme. St George’s also has pastoral specialists, an in-house counsellor and a peer-support network.
Extracurricular activities. A very wide range of clubs and societies take place both at lunchtime and after school. In addition to music and sport, a broad range of interests is catered for. Some examples include Lego Robotics, Young Enterprise, Philosophy and Mindfulness, and new clubs are added each year.
Sport. All students participate in the wide variety of sports offered at St George’s: rugby, hockey, netball, cricket, tennis, rowing, and rounders, plus a wide range of other activities such as golf, athletics, badminton, basketball and cross-country. Each student has the opportunity to develop their own talents in small coaching groups. The College has its own Activity Centre, Boat House on the Thames, 19 tennis courts (including four indoor), two floodlit artificial pitches with viewing stand, floodlit netball courts, six artificial cricket nets, one main pavilion and two smaller cricket pavilions, and eight rugby pitches. The College has access to the Junior School's heated outdoor swimming pool. Attendance at national hockey finals is an annual event and the College hosts a very popular Under 18 Hockey Sixes every year. International honours have recently been gained in hockey, cricket, rowing and tennis.
Junior School. St George’s Junior School is located nearby in Thames Street, Weybridge, and is co-educational for children aged 3 to 11.
Fees per term (2024-2025). First Year to Upper Sixth: £9,458. Lunches are optional at £460.
Charitable status. St George’s College Weybridge is a Registered Charity, number 1017853, and a Company Limited by Guarantee. The aims and objectives of the Charity are the Christian education of young people.
