The school, founded in 1611, was reconstituted in the 19th century under the Endowed Schools Act. The main buildings of Hulme Grammar School were opened in 1895 on a commanding south-west facing site overlooking the city of Manchester.
The Oldham Hulme family of schools is renowned for delivering outstanding levels of education at each stage of a child’s development. With unbeatable standards and outstanding achievements, the schools cater for boys and girls aged 2 to 18 and offer a caring, orderly and academically stimulating environment.
Life as part of the Hulme family begins at our Pre-Prep School, which sits in a purpose built, modern building. Confidence and a broad, balanced education is then instilled in pupils throughout our flourishing Prep School, our thriving Senior School and finishing at our outstanding Sixth Form, creating well rounded young adults ready to achieve their full potential as they transition into adult life.
At Hulme Grammar, we believe in the power of curiosity, critical thinking, and creativity. Our dedicated teachers are passionate about igniting the spark of curiosity within each student, encouraging them to question, explore, and develop a love for learning that extends far beyond the classroom and which they will carry with them forever.
In the past school year, students at Hulme Grammar School have continued to aim high and achieve higher, with GCSE and A Level grades outperforming many other schools, as well as sporting prowess, with 2 students winning medals at the English Summer National Swimming meet, one student going reporting on the Women’s World Cup Final and our Young Entrepreneurs team, Foxglove Papers, reaching the final of the Side Hustle Initiative, winning countless awards in the process.
Beyond individual achievements, the school also raised over £5,500 for charity in the last school year, with events held for a local hospice, a care facility for children with complex disabilities, LGBT+ charities, as well as students volunteering their time to support disabled pilgrims at Lourdes in France.
At Hulme we expect much of our pupils in the classroom. However, we also expect much of them outside of it as well! We take a holistic approach to education and a dynamic and vibrant extra-curricular programme is a key part of what we can offer your child. Our extra-curricular programme is rich and varied and runs across the age range.
We believe that what sets Hulme apart in this regard is the level of participation in our extra-curricular programme – it’s not just the preserve of the few. Our PE departments run teams in sports that are too numerous to list here; 115 of our students take instrumental music lessons, our Combined Cadet Force is flourishing and challenges its cadets in a range of exciting ways. We are always looking to add new and interesting clubs to our programme; recent additions include a team for the Moon Camp Challenge, E-Sports, Anime & Japanese club, Robotics club and Eco club. We also encourage healthy competition, with Mock Trials, School Masterchef and Hulme’s Got Talent being firm favourites of students.
The pastoral structure is crucial to the support given to our pupils. The form tutor is the first point of call for parents and pupils and each year group has a dedicated head of year supported by the Assistant Principal Pastoral.
We have small forms allowing us to know our pupils well and to give individual care. We are able to respond quickly to issues and are very supportive in our approach. There is close communication with parents and our pupils are nurtured in a caring environment.
We have three school counsellors and a school nurse who augment the pastoral care and the support on offer. We have a peer mentor scheme, reinforced through our PSHE course. We also have Tootoot where students can discuss their problems anonymously and receive immediate support.
We tailor the curriculum to individual needs and circumstances. For example, some year 8 & 9 students have Learning Support in place of a second foreign language. We ensure that the most able students are fully challenged by their academic work. And in the planning of lessons, the aptitudes, needs and prior attainments of pupils are taken into account.
Fees per academic year (2023-2024). Pre-Prep (see website), Prep School £9,840, Senior School and Sixth Form £13,470; International Students £18,000 per annum payable in advance.
A number of bursaries are awarded annually to pupils entering at the ages of 11 and 16. These awards are based on parental income and academic ability and will remain in place for the time in school subject to satisfactory progress by the pupil.
Charitable status. Hulme Grammar School is a Registered Charity, number 526636. It exists to provide a balanced academic education for pupils aged 2 to 18.
