Established in 1905, Tormead is one of the leading independent day schools for girls aged 4–18 and a member of the GSA (Girls’ Schools Association) and the HMC (The Heads' Conference). Located close to the town centre of Guildford, Surrey, Tormead benefits from pleasant grounds combined with the practicalities and local resources of a busy and thriving town nearby.
As an academically selective school, we achieve excellent results. Almost all Tormead students progress to higher education, reading for degrees at some of the best universities across the country. While standards and expectations are high, the teaching and learning environment at Tormead is one of fun and enthusiasm; students leave the school as confident, articulate and self-reliant young women, ready to meet the challenges of life beyond secondary school.
Our curricular enrichment programme is extensive and boasts over 108 clubs and co-curricular opportunities for girls to take part in and discover. Activities such as the Duke of Edinburgh Award, Lamda, 3D Printing Club, Rowing, Dissection Club, Forensics Society, Football and Technical Theatre Club give each girl the opportunity to experience new activities and find their niche. Tormead has a lively and active musical life, with orchestras, various chamber groups, ensembles and choirs on offer, as well as our highly popular Jazz Band that has undertaken tours to various European countries.
Tormead excels at sport, with a busy programme of fixtures in hockey, netball, cricket, athletics, football and swimming taking place throughout the school year for every age group in the secondary school. Gymnastics has been a particular strength at Tormead for many years, with our teams competing successfully at national level and bringing home national championships.
We are also one of the select few schools to hold Apple Distinguished School Status meaning girls benefit from the use of iPads and Apple technology to enrich their learning and extracurricular activities. By exposing students to a vast array of apps, we feel we foster the importance of creativity within our curriculum.
The School opened a new Sixth Form Centre in 2023 which includes a common room and café, lecture and teaching spaces, and dedicated study, collaboration and social spaces, all designed to bridge the gap between secondary education and university. The School completed a very exciting new development in 2025, in collaboration with Guildford County School, to create a new sporting home for Tormead at the Urnfield sports ground, providing state-of-the-art facilities for hockey, cricket, football and athletics, as well as open the door for rugby to develop as a new sport option.
As an academically selective school, we achieve excellent results; in 2025, 82% of all A level grades were an A*–B and 82% of all GCSE grades were 9–7.
