A sense of belonging, infinite opportunities and unlimited possibilities is what it feels like to be a child at St Peter’s Junior School. We are an award-winning IAPS and HMC junior school and nursery for girls and boys aged 2-11, offering a warm welcome into the St Peter's School, York, family.
Curriculum. We teach the ‘whole child’ through a thematic approach, ensuring they have a genuine thirst and love of learning. We are welcoming and inspiring, creative and forward-thinking, providing an outstanding learning environment and endless opportunities for adventure and discovery. Younger years enjoy weekly music, language, PE and Forest School lessons. As children move into Years 5 and 6 they will begin to access more specialist teaching in addition to this. Subjects which benefit from specialised teaching and subjects such as science, art, DT, music and drama will be taught in fully equipped areas. This means that pupils gain some experience of moving around the school on a timetable, just like they will at the Senior School.
Music and Drama. All children throughout the school have ample opportunity to be creative and express themselves. Beginning at Nursery, children have a weekly session of music and movement with a dedicated music teacher. From Year 2, children can learn to play a variety of instruments in personal lessons. Each year there are opportunities for children to participate in music and dramatic performances to a wider audience.
Sport and co-curricular activities. Physical Education starts in the Nursery. Swimming is added as an optional Saturday activity from Reception and becomes part of the weekly timetable from Year 1. The pupils have access to the impressive sports facilities and 50-acre green campus at St Peter’s School. Co-curricular activities include: Art, Ballet, Drama, Football, Tennis, Coding, Languages and School Council.
Assessments. Throughout Nursery and Reception, children work towards achieving the Early Learning Goals, culminating in the completion of the Foundation Stage Profile. Work is assessed continuously, and children’s progress is discussed at staff meetings. Incas is used in Years 1 to 3 for assessment purposes which informs future planning. There is ongoing communication between parents and staff through Friday Open Classrooms, the reports system, invitations to visit the school and parent evenings.
The latest ISI Inspection in 2025 found St Peter’s School 2–18 met all of the standards included in the inspection– the highest grading that any school can achieve.
Charitable status. St Peter’s School, York, is a Registered Charity, number 1141329. It exists to provide education for boys and girls.
