St Leonards School in St Andrews spans Years 1 to 13, with Years 1–6 classed as the ‘Junior Years’. The school is administered by the Board of Governors and offers day and boarding education – boarding is available from age 10.
Pupils typically continue to Year 7, the first of the Senior Years, and beyond to Year 13. With specialist teachers and small classes, children benefit from individual attention. In addition to a strong academic tradition, drama, music, languages, art, ICT and sport are included in the timetable. Swimming is taught every week, and sports are on rotation each term – hockey and rugby in the Autumn, hockey and lacrosse in the Spring, and tennis, cricket and athletics in the Summer.
St Leonards was the first school in Scotland to be accredited to teach the inspiring International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme, which encourages boys and girls to develop a love of learning. Since its accreditation for the PYP, St Leonards has become one of just two IB continuum schools in the UK, actively offering the PYP, MYP, CP and DP.
Pupils enjoy a dynamic and refreshing approach to teaching and learning both in and outside the classroom. The diverse programme of co-curricular activities offers up to 50 options each year, varying from term to term to encourage young people to develop new passions. Favourites include gymnastics, bushcraft, beach club, Green Team, judo and yoga.
The St Leonards Croft offers pupils opportunities to engage in 'farm to fork' activities, growing their own vegetables and pollinating plants (to encourage the resident bees). Vegetables are harvested and prepared for lunch, which brings a real sense of satisfaction.
St Andrews is known as the 'Home of Golf' and St Leonards offers an outstanding Golf Programme. With eight tiers catering to all abilities, the youngest pupils start in the St Leonards Minis before progressing up through the levels and benefitting from Links golf courses and state-of-the-art tracking technology.
Outdoor learning is part of the ethos in the Junior Years, including camping, whittling and Beach School, which is delivered close to home at the East Sands, just a four-minute walk from the campus. A classroom at St Leonards is not bound by four walls, and the children spend lessons at the beach whenever possible, the teachers making the most of the school's stunning surroundings and natural resources to bring learning to life.
Boarding in the Junior Years is available from Year 6 upwards, with the younger and middle years boarders living in St Rule, a mixed house which was refurbished to the highest standard in 2019. Everyone's favourite pastime is walking ‘up town’ to Jannettas Gelateria for a scoop of ice cream as a treat!
