Ruthin School offers a range of academic scholarships to recognise outstanding ability and potential. The flagship Gabriel Goodman Award, named after the school’s historic founder, celebrates academic excellence and Welsh cultural heritage. Alongside scholarships, means-tested bursaries are available to ensure that talented local students can access a Ruthin education regardless of financial circumstances. Additional remissions are offered for siblings, service families and children of Old Ruthinians, helping to make the school as accessible as possible to a wide range of families.

Ruthin School, founded in 1284 and refounded in 1574 by Gabriel Goodman, is one of the oldest independent schools in the UK. While proud of its heritage, Ruthin is firmly modern in outlook – an ambitious, co-educational day and boarding school for around 210 students aged 11–19. Around half of our students board, and more than 20 nationalities are represented, giving the community a genuinely global feel.
Academic success is central to Ruthin life. In 2025, more than half of A level grades were at A*–A, while 72% of GCSE grades were 9–7. Students progress to leading universities each year, including Oxford, Cambridge, Russell Group and international institutions. The school’s ethos of ‘A Love of Learning’ is brought to life through High Performance Learning (HPL), a research-based framework that equips every student with the skills, attitudes and values needed to excel.
Learning at Ruthin extends far beyond the classroom. Our Electives programme, spotlighted by Estyn, offers everything from debating, robotics and choir to football, cookery and wellbeing-focused activities. Students also participate in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and enjoy regular trips to nearby Liverpool, Manchester and the mountains and coast of North Wales.
The pastoral system is personal and supportive. Every student has a form tutor who they meet with every morning, while Sixth Formers receive expert UCAS and careers guidance. Boarding is organised across four houses – Goodman, Trevor, Wynne and Gladstone – each with dedicated house staff creating a secure, welcoming home from home.
Scholarships, including the Gabriel Goodman Award for contributions to Welsh heritage, celebrate academic excellence and Welsh culture. Means-tested bursaries are available to ensure that talented local students can benefit from a Ruthin education, alongside sibling and service family remissions.
Current fees (2025 entry, including VAT) range from approximately £15,800 to £18,500 per year for day students, with full boarding at £54,800. All prices are inclusive of VAT. Weekly boarding is also available. Five daily buses serve Chester, Wrexham and the North Wales coast, with termly airport transfers from Manchester for boarders.
Ruthin’s blend of tradition, academic ambition and a warm, close-knit community ensures that every student is challenged, supported and inspired to achieve their very best. We hope you will join us.
