The Junior School stands on a magnificent campus extending to over 110 acres, which it shares with Royal Russell Senior School (11–18 years). (See Royal Russell School entry in HMC section.) The school is well served by road, tram and rail links and is one of the few co-educational schools in the South London area.
Alongside the outstanding class teaching that takes place, the children in the Junior School benefit from the knowledge, guidance and expertise of specialist teachers in a large number of vital curriculum areas. These specialists are dedicated to progression and build authenticity into everyday learning. The school has a broad and deep curriculum which seeks to blend the highest standards of academic achievement with a wide range of co-curricular activities developing the whole child.
There are opportunities for all pupils to participate in football, netball, hockey, swimming, trampolining, gymnastics, cross-country and cricket as team sports alongside a PE and Health Related Fitness curriculum. There is an extensive fixture list of matches against other schools and Royal Russell regularly competes regionally and nationally, with significant success.
Artistic development extends to include full dramatic and musical productions, and many pupils learn musical instruments and achieve scholarships to Senior Schools. All forms of art, design and technology are entwined within the curriculum and benefit from our bespoke Art and Design workspace.
There are excellent teaching facilities with the latest interactive technology, complemented by Science Laboratories, Music and Art Rooms, Computer Suite, School Chapel and a Performing Arts Centre with a 200-seat Auditorium. For sport, the impressive facilities include a large Sports Hall, Gymnasium, floodlit all-weather pitch for hockey and tennis, multi-use games area, netball courts, 4 grass pitches for athletics, football and cricket and an indoor swimming pool. The Forest School is central to the Early Years and Lower Junior curriculum, and, at playtime, children enjoy the adventure playground and extensive estate.
The majority of the pupils join the school at 3 years old in the Nursery, and transfer to the Senior School at 11+. Candidates for entry to the Lower Juniors and Early Years are assessed informally, while all other entrants sit assessments in English, Mathematics and Cognitive Ability appropriate to their ages. Prospective parents are very welcome to come and meet the Headmaster and to tour the school, by appointment.
