At Redmaids’ High Junior School, girls receive an outstanding educational experience. Our mission is for your daughter to wake up every morning eager to be at school. Small class sizes, dedicated teachers and a friendly, nurturing atmosphere, make that a reality.
We set the bar high academically, stretching our pupils to ensure they become the best they can be. Each week, time is given to all subjects in our broad curriculum. Alongside the core areas, the foundation subjects and creative arts are just as valued. Sport is integral to our timetable, instilling positive attitudes towards physical activity. A focus on teamwork and specific skills leads to success in competitive fixtures.
Our single-sex setting means no dilution of attention to the needs of the girls. They are offered all the opportunities, hold all the responsibilities, and enjoy everything in their path without any self-consciousness or stereotypical judgement.
Extracurricular activities are an essential part of the Redmaids’ High experience. Girls learn resilience and determination through trying new things. Whether it is playing chess, football or hockey, taking part in a concert or book group, joining art or fencing clubs, caving on the Mendips or sailing in Bristol docks, they enjoy busy, active and purposeful days.
We value diversity and embrace internationalism; we are forward-thinking in our teaching, preparing our pupils for an ever-changing technological future filled with careers that have not even been dreamed of yet.
The House system enables girls to work and make friends with children in all year groups. There is a happy and relaxed atmosphere within the school, with easy access for parents to speak to teachers, a regular discussion group with the headteacher and many social events bringing families, staff and pupils together.
Assessment of pupil progress is built into every subject area. We moved away from SAT testing some years ago, preferring Durham University’s INCAS test for monitoring performance and progression, and individual target setting.
Pastoral care is one of our major strengths. New pupils are supported by a buddy system and through school meetings and class activities, pupils learn about good citizenship, taking responsibility for themselves, for each other and for the care of their community and environment.
Close links are fostered between the Junior and Senior schools. Pupils benefit from use of the science laboratory, extensive PE facilities including an all-weather pitch, shared dining facilities and award-winning catering. The Lawns is a sports facility, just a 10-minute drive away. At age 11, transition occurs to the Senior School (conditions apply) having sat the entrance examination and applied for academic, sport and music scholarships alongside those joining from other schools. (See Redmaids’ High School entry in GSA section.)
The School occupies a spacious site nestled in a quiet residential neighbourhood. We have a mix of well-maintained traditional and purpose-built buildings including a library, music room, art studio and lofty assembly hall, plus a large garden for outdoor play complete with sports and climbing equipment.
Admission: All girls are assessed prior to entry. Potential Year 3 pupils are assessed in pairs, with girls spending half the day in class and half working alongside the headteacher. Year 4, 5 and 6 taster days are conducted in groups. Interested families are encouraged to visit the school individually or at one of our visiting events.
Charitable status. Redmaids’ High School is a Registered Charity, number 1105017.
