For more than 125 years, Quainton Hall, now John Lyon School (Prep) has served families in and around Harrow. The School became a part of John Lyon School in 2020. Together as one school, John Lyon provides the very best education for pupils aged 3–18, from the very youngest in the Nursery right the way through to A-Level students in the Sixth Form.
The life and work of the school is planned to enable children to shine in those areas and activities that they are good at and to reach their full potential. All members of staff have this objective as their aim. We also encourage the notion that learning is fun and that the acquisition of knowledge brings its own rewards. All that we do is conducted in an atmosphere and ethos that is personal, caring and family-orientated. We promote good order and self-discipline, consideration, and tolerance towards others as well as personal motivation and group endeavour.
Curriculum. Children enjoy a broad and inclusive education, firmly centred on the core values of respect, integrity, determination, and humility. With an emphasis on achievement, we believe in setting high expectations, leading by example, and creating a secure, positive and inspiring learning environment where our pupils can feel challenged and supported to aim high and develop their individual talents.
Our results are consistently impressive and many of our leavers gain scholarships to the senior schools of their choice. In a recent ISI School Inspection, we were rated the highest possible ‘Excellent’, for both our pupils’ academic achievement and personal development.
Nursery. As soon as children walk through the doors of our Nursery they become part of the caring John Lyon family. Set within a large, recently refurbished and well-equipped building, with lots of access to outside space, our Nursery children are given the space to be inquisitive about the world around them while being supported to discover a love of learning that will benefit them for the rest of their lives.
Pre-Prep. From Reception to Year 2 our emphasis is on making our pupils feel excited about their learning and showing children how they can develop to the best of their ability in a caring yet challenging environment. We focus on building firm foundations in Literacy and Mathematics whilst ensuring children learn through cross-curricular themes and topics. The small classes have one class teacher and one teaching assistant, which means that each individual child is able to receive all the attention and support needed.
Prep. From Year 3 to Year 6, pupils begin to attend lessons with subject specialists in English and Mathematics, as well as other subjects including Science, Computing, Art, and French, together with a full Games programme, which includes some competition against other schools. Great care is taken by form teachers and subject staff to develop in each child a good sense of purpose and drive, supported by sound and effective organisational skills. Each child’s effort and attainment is regularly assessed and homework becomes a feature of school life. Children are also expected to have a reading book with them at all times. By the age of 11, John Lyon pupils are ready to make the leap into secondary education with great confidence.
Admissions. Choosing the right nursery and first school for your child can be a daunting prospect, so we are here to guide parents every step of the way.
Children typically join the Prep School in either Nursery or Reception years and continue to the end of Year 6, aged 11. However, some children do join us at other stages, and we are always pleased to welcome them. We are proud to serve the families of Harrow and surrounding areas. Our families typically come to us from a Northwest London catchment area including the Boroughs of Barnet, Brent, Ealing and Hillingdon, as well as parts of Middlesex, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire.
The most common senior school destination for pupils is John Lyon School (Senior). Other school destinations include Merchant Taylor’s, the two Haberdasher’s schools, and City of London.
Pastoral care. The School is very much a family school where children are always our highest priority and where teachers and other staff operate an open-door policy. Our pastoral care is of paramount importance to us and our approach is rooted in a strong sense of community based on the belief that happy children can achieve great things.
Facilities. Through an ongoing desire to improve and enhance our provision, we are proud to boast first rate facilities including a recently refurbished swimming pool and Art and Design Centre, an AstroTurf pitch, a new ICT suite and modern classrooms with interactive whiteboards. We also have extensive use of sporting facilities at our Senior School.
Charitable status. The Keepers and Governors of the Free Grammar School of John Lyon is a Registered Charity, number 310033.
