Port Regis is a co-educational day and boarding school for children aged 2–13. Located in the beautiful Dorset countryside, the school provides the perfect environment in which boys and girls can flourish and enjoy school.
Message from the Headmaster: Founded in 1881, Port Regis is steeped in history and yet it remains a community that is, at its core, forward-thinking and innovative in its approach to educating young children.
Few other prep schools can provide the breadth of experience on offer at Port Regis. It is renowned for its exceptional staff and academic credentials, as well as its first-class facilities, set within 150 acres of stunning grounds in rural Dorset. These facilities (which eclipse many at senior schools) enable Port Regis to deliver an outstanding holistic education that inspires the head, the hand and the heart.
However, I believe it is the engagement of the heart, in education, that is foundational. I have come to understand that the best schools do not just focus on the expansion of pupils’ intellects, artistic creativity or physical health. The best schools go deeper still. They nurture the character and moral values of their pupils. As a preparatory school, not only are we preparing girls and boys for life at senior school, but we’re preparing them for the great adventure of life itself. So, it is entirely fitting that Port Regis has a compelling motto: ‘We seek higher things.’ It seems to me that this gets to the heart of the matter. Our passion is to help pupils hone an array of qualities – generosity and endeavour, courage and creativity, good manners and friendship. These things underpin a Port Regis education. These things propel Portregians far in life.
And an education such as this should not only be purposeful and stretching, but also great fun! The best schools should be joyful schools. Joy and wonder are integral parts of childhood and should be visible and audible in every corridor, classroom and playground.
We would love you to come and visit Port Regis. It is a very special place. You will find a school in a stunning location, with a distinctive ethos and a tremendous spirit!
Titus Mills, Headmaster
Port Regis is located in 150 acres of parkland in the stunning Dorset countryside and enjoys a beautiful campus with facilities that are second to none in the Prep school world. Extensive woodland with nature trails sits alongside lawns, several ponds and a lake, so that the children can enjoy the space and freedom of the grounds. There are also 35 acres of games pitches, a nine-hole (18 tees) golf course, hockey pitch, hard tennis and netball courts, a 25m indoor swimming pool, a rifle range and an indoor sports complex, which includes two sports halls. An equestrian centre is conveniently situated close to the School.
The school’s enviable reputation attracts the best teaching staff from all over the country. We are extremely fortunate to have an immensely accomplished team of staff dedicated to achieving this and who provide the happy, family atmosphere in which a child can realise their full potential. Port Regis is extremely proud of its 100% Common Entrance success record and the high number of scholarships and awards won to senior schools every year. Learning Support is available for children with mild-to-moderate specific learning difficulties.
2022 ISI Inspection: The school was inspected by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) in September 2022 and was rated ‘Excellent’ in every single judgement.
Extensive opportunities are provided for Music (about three-quarters of the School learn an instrument), Drama (there are up to six productions a year) and Art (in a wide choice of media), with Woodwork, Electronics, Riding, .22 Rifle Shooting, Karate, Gymnastics and Canoeing included in a list of over 70 hobby options. Major team games are Rugby, Hockey, Soccer, Netball and Cricket. Inter-school, county and national standard competitions are entered. Home and abroad trips take place.
The high standard of boarding provision is an impressively strong feature of the school, which explains why so many boys and girls choose to board (awarded 'Excellent' by ISI inspection).
Open Mornings take place each term and include tours of the school with pupils. Personal visits are also available.
Academic, Music, Gymnastic, Sport and All-Rounder entrance scholarships may be awarded annually.
