Loughborough Amherst School is a Catholic, co-educational school for children aged 4–18. We seek to educate the whole person, inspiring our pupils to be curious, kind to one another and believe in themselves. A Catholic school in the truest sense, we are welcoming of all, regardless of faith background and aim to help parents in their task of nurturing confident, compassionate and happy young people.
With an excellent pupil-to-teacher ratio, our small class sizes offer exceptionally high levels of individual support, giving every child the opportunity to realise their goals. Amherst’s through-school offer, from Nursery to Sixth Form, allows all pupils to progress here from infancy to young adulthood, creating a distinct, family atmosphere that makes Amherst uniquely warm and welcoming.
Central to the academic curriculum is our ‘Minerva’ teaching and learning philosophy. Named after the Roman goddess of wisdom, Minerva develops pupils’ habits in four key areas: growth mindset, memory capacity, articulation and confidence. Fostering these vital skills at a young age helps our pupils develop into self-assured, expressive and independent young people who are prepared for the demands of life beyond school.
Our Year 13 leavers gain places at a wide range of destinations, including Russell Group and international universities, and degree apprenticeships. We provide bespoke support for competitive courses such as Medicine, and several students have gained Oxbridge places in recent years.
Our co-curricular programme offers stretch and challenge for all and develops leadership, teamwork and wellbeing skills. We offer a broad and engaging range of enrichment opportunities to encourage the wider development of children, from top level sport to music, drama, art, community engagement, Combined Cadet Force, and a great number of tours, trips and clubs.
Amherst School is part of The Loughborough Schools Foundation, a foundation of four schools comprising: Fairfield Prep School (boys and girls 3–11), Loughborough Amherst School (boys and girls 4–18), Loughborough Grammar School (boys 10–18) and Loughborough High School (girls 11–18). The schools operate under one governing body which means that our pupils benefit from exceptional shared facilities, including our outstanding Music department, cutting-edge STEM resources, a team of exceptional educators, diverse co-curricular programmes, excellent sports facilities, top-level coaching, nutritious catering, and a comprehensive transport service within our extensive catchment area.
