Oakhyrst Grange School is an independent, co-educational preparatory day school for boys and girls aged 4 to 11.
Founded in 1950 and established on its current Stanstead Road site in 1957, the school has been administered by a non-profit-making trust since 1973. Set in five acres of open countryside and woodland within the Surrey Hills, the school benefits from a beautiful and inspiring Green Belt location.
Oakhyrst Grange offers a broad and imaginative curriculum that blends traditional teaching with progressive, innovative approaches. Small class sizes and an excellent teacher-to-pupil ratio allow children to progress at their own pace while being challenged to aim higher. Academic excellence is fostered alongside creativity, curiosity and resilience, with pupils encouraged to develop confidence and independence in readiness for their next school.
Year after year, pupils secure places at leading senior schools, with many awarded scholarships and exhibitions for academic achievement, sport, music, art, drama, and all-round ability.
Sport is a particular strength at Oakhyrst. Pupils enjoy extensive facilities including a heated indoor swimming pool, floodlit multi-use games area, tennis, netball, hockey and five-a-side courts, sports pitch, and a cross-country course. Success is achieved across many disciplines, with notable accomplishments at ISA National level in cross-country, swimming, football and athletics. Children compete in a wide range of inter-house, inter-school, and regional competitions, developing teamwork, resilience and ambition.
Music and the Arts are woven into school life and the children excel. Alongside timetabled lessons, pupils can take individual instrumental tuition and participate in ensembles including orchestra, flute, guitar, string and cello groups, as well as a chamber choir. Regular concerts and performances give children the confidence to share their talents with the wider community.
An extensive co-curricular programme runs throughout the week, offering clubs and activities to suit a wide range of interests. As a designated Forest School, Oakhyrst integrates outdoor learning into both curriculum and extracurricular opportunities. With a trained Forest School leader on staff, pupils are able to explore, play and learn in woodland settings – developing independence, problem-solving skills, and a sense of adventure.
At Oakhyrst Grange School, the emphasis is on nurturing the whole child. Pupils leave us not only with strong academic foundations but also as well-rounded, aspirational and kind individuals, fully prepared to thrive at their senior schools and beyond.
