Newcastle School for Boys is the only independent school in the north east providing continuous education for boys from ages 3 to 18. Situated in Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne, the Senior School site on The Grove covers 5 acres of playing fields and buildings that currently house Years 7 to 11. Opposite the Senior School, Years 12 and 13 are housed in their own dedicated Sixth Form Centre, opened in September 2017. Our Junior School is housed on nearby sites on West Avenue and North Avenue. The School currently has 390 pupils on role from Nursery to Year 13.
The academic curriculum starts in the Infants and provides boys with opportunities for stretch and challenge from the outset. This leads through the Juniors to GCSE, A level and vocational qualifications in a wide range of disciplines at the Senior School and Sixth Form.
Pastoral care is outstanding throughout the school and boys receive plenty of individual attention so that they grow in confidence and independence.
Newcastle School for Boys believes strongly in enhancing learning beyond the classroom and runs an extensive trips and visits programme. Residential and day visits are offered to all pupils from age 5 onwards and culminate in major overseas trips and Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award expeditions in the Sixth Form.
Senior School. The Senior School starts at Year 7 (11+) and runs through to Year 13 (18+).
We offer an enhanced curriculum leading up to GCSE, where most boys study 10 subjects. The Senior School provides an extensive co-curricular programme of music and a wide range of sports, including a number of major overseas trips. The School enhances its sporting provision using a number of excellent local facilities including at South Northumberland Cricket Club and Northern Rugby Club.
Sixth Form. The School has established a successful and growing Sixth Form offering students a wide choice of A level and vocational qualifications. The Sixth Form provides the learning and support the boys need to achieve their best possible academic and personal outcomes.
Entrance and scholarship Examinations are offered in January for boys entering Year 7 (11+), Year 9 (13+) and Year 12 (16+). Entry at other points is possible following a full academic assessment and interview.
Junior School. The learning environment across our Junior School is tailored to the needs of the younger boys, taking into account their energy and enthusiasm for challenge and discovery. The curriculum offered is a blend of the traditional and the innovative and is designed to balance the need for adventure and fun, while maintaining progress in numeracy and literacy. The boys are provided with opportunities to develop their individual academic talents and to pursue their creative goals. Excellence is also pursued in the sporting arena where boys have opportunities including football, rugby, cricket, golf and table tennis.
Regular drama performances and musical productions encourage teamwork and build confidence from an early age.
Breakfast club and after-school clubs and activities provide full wraparound care.
Charitable status. Newcastle School for Boys is a Registered Charity, number 503975.
