Founded in 1898, Moorlands is the oldest prep school in Leeds and is dedicated to providing a first-class education for girls and boys aged 2 to 11 years in a warm, friendly environment.
The school is conveniently located off the Ring Road at Weetwood Lane, yet it sits in beautiful grounds providing all the outdoor space required for children to play in a safe and secure environment. The school boasts fantastic wraparound care facilities, excellent teaching standards, an on-site swimming pool and small class sizes.
Being part of the Methodist Independent Schools’ Trust enables us to deliver outstanding value for money. Unlike many other schools, our fees for children in Reception (starting the term after they turn 5) to Year 6 include:
supervised breakfast club from 7.30 am, after-school care and a cooked tea from 5.00 pm–6.00 pm
educational day visits which form part of the learning experience on the curriculum
a choice of around 20 free-to-attend clubs which take place between 4.00 pm and 5.00 pm
regular learning support sessions for those children who would benefit from it
for KS1 and KS2, weekly bushcraft and outdoor learning sessions held in our extensive grounds, taught by Yorkshire Dales Bushcraft
for Reception, Forest School sessions held within the Early Years woodland area in the school grounds
weekly swimming lessons held in the on-site heated indoor pool, with qualified instructors
specialist teaching in Music, Drama, Modern Foreign Languages and Art.
The aim of the school is to develop the full potential of every child within a happy and caring environment fostered by small classes and the professional skills of a highly qualified staff. Strong links between the parents and the school are encouraged to facilitate the provision of an effective education.
Admission is by assessment and observation. Pupils are accepted at 2 years old for entry into the Nursery and are expected to progress through the school in preparation for entry to senior independent day and boarding schools. The school has a well-developed specialist facility to provide assistance to pupils with any learning issues, such as dyslexia, or to gifted children.
Blended with this traditional core of academic work is offered a comprehensive range of sporting activities, outdoor education and a wide range of musical and extracurricular pursuits.
At Moorlands, we have a simple yet beautiful motto, ‘Intrepide’, or ‘be brave’! In school, we talk about how being brave or intrepid takes many forms. Being brave isn’t always a grand gesture; sometimes it simply means ‘having a go’, such as attempting that difficult question, offering an answer in class when you’re not quite sure or trying something new. This culture of intrepidness allows children to try new things in a safe, nurturing and stimulating environment.
