The King Alfred School is unique among independent schools in North London. Apart from being all-age (4–18), co-ed and secular, it takes in a range of ability as opposed to its academically selective neighbours in the private sector.
The school’s beginnings are unusual: it was founded in 1898 by a group of Hampstead parents and its governing body comprises mainly current and ex-parents. Visitors tend to comment on the pretty site (on the edge of Hampstead Garden Suburb), the ‘village’ layout (carefully preserved by a succession of architects), and the friendly atmosphere – this is a no-uniform establishment and all are on first-name terms.
Academic results are consistently impressive and constantly improving, and almost 100% of the KAS Sixth Form go on to universities and some go to Art Foundation courses, music colleges and conservatoires. The school prides itself on its reputation as a relaxed, informal and vibrant community that focuses on the development of the whole child and achieves academic success within a non-pressured environment.
Bursaries for Year 7 and the Sixth Form are available.
Charitable status. King Alfred School is a Registered Charity, number 312590. It exists to provide quality education for boys and girls.
