Holme Grange is a co-educational day school for girls and boys aged 2–16 years. The school provides pupils with a toolkit to live their lives and when they eventually enter the adult world, they will do so well prepared with a real-life foundation for every challenge they will face. Set in 21 acres of Wokingham countryside, Holme Grange offers a unique educational journey in an idyllic setting, delivering a creative experience, sporting prowess and academic excellence.
The School occupies a large country mansion, to which many additional facilities have been added over recent years, including outdoor classrooms, three additional science laboratories, food technology room, common room and additional classrooms. 2016 saw the opening of a 300-seat Performing Arts Theatre, Music School and Drama Suite and a new block housing a dining room, kitchens and eight additional classrooms. The Sports Hall was also extended, offering a fitness gym and changing facilities. Further expansion saw the opening of a new senior building in 2019 and this year a fourth science laboratory was added to the senior facilities. Pre-Prep and Prep also have a dedicated Science Laboratory. Reception pupils moved into new classroom facilities in September 2019, with direct access to an adventure playground. A Recording Studio was introduced for the start of the 2020–21 academic year.
The School is set in an idyllic environment of grounds comprising grass pitches, all-weather surfaces, swimming pool, Cricket, Football, Hockey and Rugby pitches, Netball and Tennis courts, 3 Forest schools and woodland walks for the children to explore. Specialist teaching and facilities for Music, Art and Technology, Dance, Performing Arts, Science, ICT and Sport enhance our fully comprehensive provision and support the individual development of all our pupils. Holme Grange is one of the first schools in the area to have gained Forest School status and has a number of qualified Forest Leaders on the Staff, thus allowing opportunities for children to achieve and develop confidence and knowledge through hands-on learning in a woodland environment. The erection of a second Polytunnel, together with a market garden shop, provide opportunities for pupils to learn about sustainable education while the development and expansion of the School farm with its goats, pigs, chickens and ducks enable the pupils to learn about life cycles and animal husbandry in a very hands-on manner.
We have recently acquired an established Day Nursery located nearby our School premises and have relocated our existing Nursery to this new site. Little Grange Nursery is equipped to the highest standard and is located in a safe and secure environment and will offer flexible day care from 8.00 am to 6.00 pm Monday to Friday for children from the age of two years through to when they start in Reception. Little Grange, though not now within our School grounds, will, very much, continue to be part of Holme Grange, with our teaching staff regularly going up to Nursery to teach Sport and Music. The Nursery children will also participate in activities at the main school site from time to time.
We welcome and cater for pupils with a wide range of ability. Holme Grange welcomes pupils with a wide range of abilities, using taster days and assessments for Years 1–6 to observe engagement, learning application, and interaction, while Years 5–11 include taster days and Admissions Day with online assessments in verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, and quantitative and spatial reasoning. This entry process is designed to identify pupils who are able to benefit from our balanced and well-rounded education. We aim to foster confidence and a love of learning across the age range. Pupils are accepted from the age of two years, providing outstanding continuous education up to and including GCSE, and also preparing students for the Common Entrance examinations. We celebrated another fantastic set of GCSE results in 2024, with 9.5% of all grades being 9, 28% of all grades being 9–8 and 43% of all grades being 9-7. The pass rate across the board was 95%.
The Headteacher is assisted by a highly qualified and experienced teaching staff with classroom assistants in the Pre-Prep and NNEB assistants in Little Grange. There is an Accelerated Learning Centre giving help to those children with special needs.
School’s Policy
The School’s policy is to set high standards, to establish good all-round personalities and to give inspiration for each pupil’s life. Our aim is to create an environment where every child can thrive. In September 2024, the School introduced a no mobile phone policy, linked to research highlighting the benefits of reduced phone use on focus, social interactions, and academic achievement. This initiative fosters a distraction-free, engaging environment for pupils.
Our Mission is to inspire achievement beyond the bounds of expectation within an environment where every child can succeed. A bold statement but one that we believe every child deserves. We appreciate children’s differences and respond to their individual needs. In 2013, we were awarded the prestigious NACE Challenge Award for More Able, Gifted and Talented Pupils in recognition of the high-quality work by the whole school in challenging all pupils to achieve their best, gaining re-accreditation in 2017, 2021 and 2024. Holme Grange is one of only 8 schools in the country to be re-accredited three times and is recognised as a Regional Hub for NACE in the local area. In 2024, Holme Grange earned the prestigious NACE Challenge Ambassador School Status and was the fourth school in the country to achieve this. In 2020, we were awarded a Gold SMSC National Quality Mark, in recognition of the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development Holme Grange provides, and also an Artsmark Gold Award from Arts Council England.
At Holme Grange we offer excellence in personalised learning – a rare school that caters equally well for pupils at both ends of the academic continuum. We believe in our pupils and instil a belief in themselves.
We develop intellectual character through our learning habits and the ethos throughout the school is one of warmth and friendliness – questioning, divergent thinking and the freedom to learn from mistakes are all encouraged. Pupils are inspired to take responsibility for their own learning, develop good work habits and gain a sense that learning can thrill and invigorate.
We deliver a rounded education by providing opportunities in sport, the arts, languages, technology and a wide range of activities, maximising opportunities for success for all. We hope to inspire your child both in and outside of the classroom. At Holme Grange School, we foster self-reliance, self-discipline and self-confidence in a caring community where children gain interests and characteristics that give them a head start for life.
We will not only unlock your child’s potential but will also foster within them a passion for learning. Our pupils are prepared to succeed in an ever-changing, competitive world. We offer challenge, we strive to inspire, develop confidence, provide opportunity and realise potential in every child up to the age of 16.
We are committed to providing the very best education. Academic standards are excellent. Life in our school is a journey of exploration and discovery. We are a holistic school offering an all-round education, bursting with life and vitality.
The School is a Trust, administered by a board of Governors who have considerable experience in education and business.
