Highfield is set in 8 acres of landscaped gardens, woodlands and playing fields and is a co-educational preparatory school for children aged 18 months to 11+ years. It is fully equipped with its own established Nursery and prepares children for all Independent, Grammar and Senior Schools in Lancashire, for which it has an excellent academic record.
Class numbers average 20 and children are taught by fully qualified and experienced staff. Specialist facilities and teachers ensure that children are challenged and fulfilled across the curriculum, most notably in Art and CDT with a new studio in 2005, an ICT suite (since 1994), a Science Laboratory (2006) and, most recently, a Performing Arts Studio in 2013. Children from Nursery through to Year Six are also able to enjoy the school Library, Sports Hall and the school’s own nature reserve, Highfield Haven.
The school has strong musical, dramatic and sporting traditions. Every child in the Junior School is given the opportunity to take part in competitive sporting fixtures and to perform in a full-scale dramatic production each year. In addition, Highfield examines the Junior children in the disciplines of Public Speaking, Elocution and Drama twice a year thereby greatly improving the children’s eloquence and confidence.
Highfield holds a Step into Quality Award for its Early Years and Foundation Stage and Potential Plus UK’s Three Star Gold Membership for its work with Gifted and Talented children. Highfield encourages its pupils to 'Aim High' and gives them every opportunity to achieve this.
Highfield offers an extended day from 7.15 am until 6.00 pm. Extracurricular activities include Ballet, Gardening, Choir, Design, Dance, Judo, Public Speaking, Chess, Spanish, Homework Club and Instrument Tuition. The school is well supported by an enthusiastic Parents’ Association. Prospective parents, and children, are encouraged to visit the school, have a tour with the Headmaster and to experience a school day.
