Forest Preparatory School is part of Forest School (HMC), with which it shares a 50-acre site at the foot of Epping Forest on the East London/Essex border. Its aims are to offer an education of high quality, and to encourage and develop each child academically, physically and creatively. Pupils are taught in small co-educational classes and at age 11, they proceed to the Senior Section of Forest School (see separate entry in HMC section). Entry to the school is by selection, at 4+ and 7+ by means of an informal assessment.
The Pre-Prep has 4 forms of 16 pupils in each year group who are taught predominantly by form teachers and supported by qualified teaching assistants and a team of specialist staff.
From the age of 7, there are 24 pupils in three forms in each year group. Starting in Reception, specialist teaching staff provide lessons in computing, music, drama, swimming, Forest Schools and PE/Games with the addition of dance, art, engineering, science, French, Italian, Spanish and Mandarin as pupils progress through the school.
Academic standards, sport and music are all strengths of the school in equal measure. The main sports played are football, cricket, netball and rounders, and teams compete locally and regionally. Athletics, swimming and cross-country are all coached to a high standard. The musical life of the school is enriched by its choirs, orchestra and several chamber groups, and all pupils in Years 3 to 6 are provided with 4 years’ free tuition on a musical instrument as part of the School Gloucester programme. There are endless opportunities for pupils to perform in concerts or recitals throughout the year, in and out of School, at venues ranging from St Paul’s Cathedral, Great St Bartholomew’s Church and Cadogan Hall, as well as Chapel services. Form assemblies and school competitions also provide occasions for public-speaking and performance.
Clubs take place at lunchtime, before school and after school, with a wide variety of extracurricular clubs on offer. Breakfast club commences at 7.30 am and after-school care is available until 6.00 pm each day. Forest School also has an extensive school bus service in operation.
