A sense of belonging, infinite opportunities and unlimited possibilities is what it feels like to be a child at St Peter's 2–8. As part of the St Peter’s School family, the school represents the start of an exciting and rewarding learning adventure. In April 2021, St Peter's 2–8 was declared Pre-prep School of the Year in the national Tes Independent School Awards for its 'outstanding innovative and broad curriculum, which encourages curiosity in an ever-changing world'.
Curriculum. A vibrant and dynamic thematic skills-based curriculum is covered, which offers variety, challenge and opportunities for everyone to discover what they love. Small classes, individual attention, Forest School and a huge range of after-school activities enable high standards to be achieved. French is offered to all children from Nursery upwards.
Music and Drama. All children throughout the school have ample opportunity to be creative and express themselves. Nursery children have a session of music and movement, and all other classes have weekly lessons with a dedicated music teacher. From Year 2, children have the opportunity to learn to play a variety of instruments in personal lessons. Each year there are opportunities for children to participate in performances to a wider audience. All classes have weekly drama lessons, and there is the opportunity for Y2 and Y3 to do speech and drama as an after school activity.
Sport and Co-Curricular Activities. Physical Education starts in the Nursery. As children grow older, games and swimming are added. The pupils have access to the impressive sports facilities and 47-acre green campus at St Peter’s School. Co-curricular activities include: Art, Drama, Animation, Ballet, Karate, Explorers, Lego and The Green Team.
Assessments. Throughout Nursery and Reception, children work towards achieving the Early Learning Goals, culminating in the completion of the Foundation Stage Profile. Work is assessed continuously and children’s progress is discussed at staff meetings. Incas is used in Years 1 to 3 for assessment purposes which informs future planning. There is ongoing communication between parents and staff through a reports system, invitations to visit the school and parent evenings.
An ISI Inspection in April 2017 found St Peter’s School 2–18 to be ‘excellent’ in all areas for the quality of its education – the highest grading that any school can achieve.
Charitable status. St Peter’s School, York, is a Registered Charity, number 1141329. It exists to provide education for boys and girls.
