City of London School for Girls is an independent day school for pupils aged 11–18 situated in the heart of the Barbican. Opened in 1894, the school provides an outstanding education for able students from all backgrounds, cultures and faiths. We capitalise on our location to attract students from all over Greater London and beyond, and give them access to every learning opportunity our capital has to offer.
Academic yet unstuffy, modern yet acutely aware of its history, diverse yet with a strong sense of identity, our school defies easy categorisation. This is best demonstrated by our unique geography, nestled between the brutalist Barbican and looming Roman walls. Ours is an intellectually edgy, unassuming and unpretentious environment, unshackled by tradition, and imbued with a relaxed excellence. This is a refreshing and modern place in which to learn.
Our school is a kind and compassionate place, and our values of respect, responsibility and resourcefulness course through the concrete of our famous Barbican site. We are proud of our outstanding and individualised pastoral care, which encourages pupils to understand themselves and take considered and reflective ownership of their lives. We nurture an inclusive and kind community, which embraces the cultural and social mix in the school and world around us.
At City we aim to provide an intellectually exciting and rigorous learning environment, where students are constantly encouraged to interrogate their knowledge and understanding, to take risks and to experiment. We seek to provide them with a deep knowledge-based curriculum, but also the skills to scrutinise, synthesise and apply that knowledge in a wide variety of contexts. Discussion is at the heart of every lesson, and we are keen to inculcate in our students a familiarity and ease with ambiguity. They are unfazed by the more complex and nuanced areas, and are encouraged to grapple with these issues head on.
Admission. Main entry points to the school are at 11 and 16 years of age. For other entry points, vacancies are only occasional. The initial entrance assessments for 11+ and 16+ entry are held in the autumn term.
Applications for all applicable entry points open in spring the year before entry. Specific deadlines can be found on the website.
Scholarships and bursaries. The school offers music scholarships for entry at 11+ and 16+. There are also art, sport and drama scholarships available at 16+. City is committed to enabling access to the school for those for whom its education will be most transformational and offers means-tested bursaries for entry at 11+ and 16+.
