Chinthurst is located between the Surrey villages of Walton on the Hill and Tadworth, close to Epsom, Banstead, Kingswood and Reigate. Founded in 1908, Chinthurst is a co-educational independent day school and nursery for children aged 2 to 11 and is part of the Reigate Grammar School (RGS) family of schools.
Academic outcomes are excellent, with typically 70–80 per cent of children transferring to Reigate Grammar School for their senior education. Other children move on to a range of leading independent and state schools, both locally and further afield.

Following its latest Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) inspection in 2026, Chinthurst successfully met all required standards. Inspectors identified the school’s culture of kindness, respect and inclusion as a Significant Strength, highlighting the children’s understanding of difference and the importance of ensuring everyone feels valued and included.
Central to the school’s ethos is its bespoke Wellbeing at Heart programme, designed to help children understand how their bodies and minds work and give them the skills to navigate challenges. This inclusive approach was also recognised when Chinthurst was commended in the Diversity, Equality and Inclusion category of the 2026 Independent School of the Year Awards.
Sport is an important part of life at Chinthurst. Upper School children choose the sports they would like to play without being constrained by traditional gender expectations, with boys and girls training and competing alongside one another. Competitive sport develops teamwork, determination and sportsmanship while encouraging a lifelong enjoyment of physical activity.
A strong extracurricular programme offers additional sporting opportunities and a broad range of clubs, including dance, drama, martial arts and craft. Every child also belongs to one of four Houses, providing a sense of belonging and opportunities for friendly inter-House competition.
The thriving Nursery provides imaginative activities and adventures that build strong foundations for future learning. Cookery, STEAM, Drama, French and PE, alongside woodland learning and plenty of time outdoors, help develop thinking skills, problem-solving and independence. The Nursery and Lower School were shortlisted for Independent Pre-Prep of the Year 2024.
Chinthurst is also well known for its music, drama and art provision. Children achieve excellent results in LAMDA examinations, and the school has a strong peripatetic music programme. Opportunities to perform include assemblies, musical showcases, drama productions, choirs and ensembles, as well as performances in the local community.
Opening in September 2026, Chinthurst’s new purpose-built Creative Arts Building marks an exciting development in the school’s creative provision, giving children greater freedom and facilities to explore ideas, take creative risks and discover new talents.
