Why is Channing such a special school? Is it because we are one of only a handful of Unitarian schools in the world? Is it our location in Highgate, with easy access to all that London has to offer? Is it our unique evidence-based philosophy of developing Fearless Learners in the Senior School, or the captivating Channing Characters who permeate life in the Junior School? Or is it the extraordinary outcomes these experiences provide for each girl at Channing?
We are proud of our academically challenging and balanced curriculum, delivered by committed staff through inspirational teaching and the innovative use of technology. This is enhanced by a co-curricular program of activities, trips, and speakers designed to broaden the mind. What truly sets us apart are our Unitarian values of free thinking, acceptance and inclusivity, encapsulated in the Channing Promise of kindness and respect.
We encourage independent thinking and learning, and our students enjoy studying a wide range of subjects. They leave to take up places at top universities, with many happy memories of their time here. Many return later in their careers to support the next generation of Channing girls as they embark on their journeys into the wider world.
Number of pupils. 1,020.
The School is situated in Highgate Village in attractive grounds, and offers a balanced education combining a traditional academic curriculum with modern educational developments. The complex of old and new buildings has been constantly adapted to provide up-to-date facilities, and there are strong links with the local community and local schools.
Girls usually take nine or ten subjects to GCSE and there is a wide range of A level choices, including Physics, Further Maths, Politics and Theatre Studies. The Junior School has its own building – the elegant family home of Sir Sydney Waterlow, one-time Lord Mayor of London – set in spacious gardens, and is notable for its happy and secure atmosphere.
Most girls learn at least one musical instrument and there are frequent concerts and theatrical productions. The school is fortunate in its gardens, open space and its facilities. The school has invested £13 million in new facilities including a Sixth Form Centre with bespoke study facilities, a state-of-the-art Sports Centre, a Music School and a magnificent Performing Arts Theatre.
Entry is by assessment at 4+, an examination/assessment and interview at 11+ and predicted GCSE results and interview at 16+. In addition, entry is subject to a satisfactory report from the applicant's current school. Entry assessments for occasional vacancies that arise for other years are age appropriate.
Further information can be obtained from the School prospectus and the Sixth Form prospectus available from the Registrar and the school website (www.channing.co.uk).
Scholarships and bursaries. At Channing, we have always done our best to ensure that girls who would benefit from an education at the School are not excluded for financial reasons. We offer means-tested financial support with the payment of school fees to parents/guardians who would otherwise be unable to afford them. These bursaries may be awarded in the form of a discount of up to 100% on tuition fees, depending on the financial circumstances of applicants. All candidates who sit the 11+ entrance examination are automatically considered for a Year 7 Academic Scholarship. They do not need to make a separate application. To be considered for a Sixth Form Academic Scholarship, candidates (including current pupils) must sit the Sixth Form Academic Scholarship exam which takes place in November of every year. Music Scholarships are offered at 11+ and 16+. These cover up to 50% of the tuition fees and lessons in school on one instrument for a year (renewable). Art Scholarships are offered to Sixth Form entrants based on submission of a portfolio of work. Bursaries are offered at 11+ and 16+. Please see the school website for further details.
Fees (2024-2025). Junior School: £7,990 per term, £23,970 per annum; Senior School: £8,830 per term, £26,490 per annum.
