Bromsgrove Preparatory School feeds the adjacent 1000-strong Senior School. (See Bromsgrove School entry in HMC section.) The sites covering 100 acres offer exclusive and shared facilities, with a combined Prep and Senior Performing Arts Complex opened in November 2017, which gives outstanding performance and rehearsal facilities to the School. Boarding at Prep is thriving, with a dedicated boarding house (Page House) for 100 boys and girls; this has recently been extended by the addition of Conway Page for pupils in Year 8. This allows the School’s youngest boarders to live together in modern and comfortable surroundings. Other recent improvements include a new suite of classrooms, an upgrading of the dining hall, a new science laboratory, refurbishment of the library, main hall and sports hall. Pupils have access to a flourishing Forest School. Teachers working in both Senior and Preparatory Schools ensure continuity of ethos and expectation. Academic, sporting and cultural facilities are extensive and outstanding.
Pupils are admitted at the age of 7+ with another substantial intake at 11+ but pupils, including boarders, are admitted throughout the age range up to 13. Admission to the School is by Entrance Test supported by a report from the current school. Year 5 and 6 pupils are assessed during the course of the year; the outcome of these assessments allow them to be guaranteed a place in Bromsgrove Senior School two years later. Pupils admitted at age 11 are also guaranteed entry to the Senior School.
Prep School boarding is flourishing and the Junior boarding houses are lively, homely environments where pupils are cared for by resident houseparents and a team of tutors. The School aims to make a boarder’s first experience of life away from home enjoyable and absorbing.
All academic lessons are timetabled from Monday to Friday, with Saturdays offering an optional and flexible programme of activities and sports fixtures; the majority of pupils attend activities on a Saturday. The School has a national reputation in a number of sports.
The aim of the School is to provide a first-class education, which identifies and develops the potential of individual pupils, academically, culturally and socially. It prepares them to enter the Senior School with confidence. In the Preparatory School, there is a purposeful and lively atmosphere. Mutual trust, respect and friendship exist between staff and pupils. The high quality and dedication of the teaching staff, favourable teacher to pupil ratio and regular monitoring of performance ensure that the natural spontaneity and inquisitiveness of this age group are directed purposefully. The latest ISI Inspection (June 2023) found the School to be excellent in both categories covered by the inspection.
The pastoral care system is rooted in the School’s Christian heritage and firmly founded on the form tutor. It is designed to ensure that every pupil is recognised as an important individual and that their development is nurtured.
The School has its own feeder Pre-Preparatory School which takes children from the age of 2. The clear majority of children transfer to the Prep School at the end of Year 2. Situated just a mile away from the Prep and Senior Schools, in the spacious tree-lined grounds of an old manor house, the Pre-Preparatory School has spacious and light classrooms and delightful outdoor areas including the popular Forest School. The Headmaster is Head of both the Preparatory and Pre-Preparatory sections, giving good continuity and communication between the School. High teacher to pupil ratios and small class sizes ensure each pupil’s individual needs are met.
Charitable status. Bromsgrove School is a Registered Charity, number 1098740. It exists to provide education for boys and girls.
