St Bede’s is a Catholic HMC Independent Co-educational Grammar School welcoming Catholic and non-Catholic children from Nursery to Sixth Form. We are celebrating over 140 years of history set in a magnificent Grade II listed building in the heart of Manchester.
The College is widely recognised for the calibre of its students who leave as well-rounded, polite and articulate young adults who are academically successful and ready to meet the demands of life at university and beyond. Each year there are one hundred coveted places available ensuring each student is guaranteed individual attention and personalised support.
We believe passionately in the importance of traditional family values and in encouraging every pupil to develop genuine friendships. Each child in the College is known and valued in a community where there are no barriers to learning. Whilst academic success is a high priority, focus on developing lifelong learning is of greater significance. Ultimately we want to develop young men and women who are constructive and compassionate members of our society.
Admission. Children may join the College at different stages in their academic journey, where children can enjoy an all-through education, joining our co-educational Nursery for 3 year olds before moving up to our co-educational Prep School. and then on to the main College. It is assumed that all Prep pupils will transfer automatically into the Senior part of the College.
The College Entrance Examination for external candidates wishing to join the College at 11+ takes place in January each year. Details of the examination may be obtained from our Admissions team, email: admissions@sbcm.co.uk There is also direct entry to the Sixth Form. Interviews are held from the beginning of the Easter Term.
Curriculum. Curriculum provision is constantly monitored to ensure the best possible educational provision for all students.
The Lower School curriculum offers the core subjects of English, Mathematics, Sciences and RE together with Latin, Computer Science, Technology, History, Geography and PE/Games and tutor time. In the Middle School four subjects are chosen from French, German, Spanish, Latin, Classical Civilisation, Economics, Business, Computer Science, Design & Technology, Art and Music for a one-year course to further enhance GCSE options.
At GCSE/IGCSE, ten subjects are taken in varied combinations supported by a programme of academic enrichment.
Students must achieve 7 GCSE passes (grades 9–4) to be admitted to the Sixth Form. At A Level approximately 23 different subjects are currently on offer. Many students also opt to study the increasingly popular Extended Project Qualification. Flexibility ensures that any desired combination of subjects can be offered.
A strong learning support department ensures that all pupils fulfil their educational potential.
Co-Curriculum. There is an extensive weekly programme of extra-curricular provision that complements learning from outside the classroom and all pupils are encouraged to try new activities or extend their leadership by organising new ones for their peers.
Our goal is to develop wider skills for lifelong learning as well as helping to prepare students for the major ideas, innovations and challenges that they face in a rapidly-changing society. Bedians are confident in their ability to make a difference once they have left the College fully prepared for top universities and the world of work.
