The present School traces its origins directly back to a 13th-century foundation by the Abbot and Monks of Lindores. It received a Royal Charter in 1859. Various Acts of Parliament in the 19th century were finally consolidated in an Order in Council constituting the High School of Dundee Scheme 1965, which was revised in 1987.
Admission. The School comprises three sections:
The Nursery – 66 pupils (age 3–5; pre-school and ante pre-school).
The Junior Years – 239 pupils (Primary 1 to Primary 7).
The Senior Years – 588 pupils (S1 to S6).
The normal stages of entry are Nursery, Primary 1 and S1. Entry to Primary 1 (age 4½ to 5½ years) is by interview held in January and to S1 (age 11 to 12 years) by an Entrance Assessment held in January. Where vacancies exist, entrance is usually available at all other stages subject to satisfactory performance in an entrance assessment.
Bursaries. A number of means-tested bursaries are provided for entry to P6/7 and from S1 in the Senior Years, to help those who otherwise could not afford the fees.
Fees per term (2024-2025). Primary: £3,955 (P1 to P3), £4,144 (P4 to P5), £4,708 (P6 to P7); Secondary: £5,612. Nursery varies according to the number of sessions selected.
Buildings. The six main school buildings are in the centre of the city and form an architectural feature of the area. Two excellent, extensive playing fields – Dalnacraig and Mayfield – are situated some 1½ miles to the east of the school. As well as grass pitches, the facilities include an international standard synthetic water-based hockey surface and a sand-dressed synthetic hockey pitch which is up to national standard. The school’s Mayfield Sports Centre, comprising a state-of-the-art games hall, dance studio, gymnasium and fitness suite, is adjacent to the playing fields. The Nursery is also located at Mayfield.
Curriculum. The Junior Years follow a wide-ranging primary curriculum. Subject specialists are employed in PE, ICT, Music, Science, Modern Languages, Art, Drama and Health and Food Technology.
In the Senior Years, after two years of a general curriculum, some specialisation takes place with pupils currently being prepared for the Scottish Qualifications Authority examinations at National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher which lead directly to university entrance. Results in public examinations are amongst the best in Scotland, with pupils regularly achieving the top marks nationally in individual subjects, and 90–95% of leavers enrolling at universities in the UK or abroad.
Co-curricular activities. Almost 100 co-curricular activities are offered. Sports teams compete at the highest levels and each year a number of pupils represent their country in a wide range of sports. Music plays an important part in the life of the school, with a large number of orchestras, bands, choirs and musical ensembles to choose from. Special tuition is provided in a wide variety of instruments.
There is a flourishing contingent of the Combined Cadet Force including a pipe band. Drama, Public Speaking and Debating, Chess and The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme are examples of the wide variety of activities available.
Charitable status. The Corporation of the High School of Dundee is a Registered Charity, number SC011522. The school is a charity to provide quality education for boys and girls.
