At Casterton, Sedbergh Preparatory School we develop happy, confident children with a ‘can-do’ attitude; independent yet always with a sense of team before self. Through careful and sensitive teaching, we aim to foster a spirit of adventure, both inside and outside the classroom.
Our curriculum is ambitious and equips pupils with the necessary skills for future success, yet is delivered in a setting of timeless beauty where pupils have the space and time to enjoy their childhood. Breadth of opportunity and depth of involvement is what sets us apart. Maths competitions, explosions and dissections in Science lessons, pony care at our stables and collecting eggs from the School chickens – all these create outstanding memories for the children at Sedbergh Prep.
Our facilities are first class and include a high-spec Design, Technology and Engineering Department, seven Science laboratories, floodlit astro and tennis courts, a theatre, heated pool, equestrian centre and several computer suites. We are excited by the curiosity and thirst for learning that each child, regardless of their academic ability, naturally displays. We work hard to allow each child the time to question and develop their thoughts independently, leading to fresh discoveries in an innovative learning environment.
One of our strengths is a focus on the individual. We are not a School of rote and regurgitation. Rather, we understand that a child’s future success is dependent upon their ability to use what they know in a variety of creative ways. Every area of School life, therefore, provides fantastic opportunities for creativity of all kinds. Day in, day out, we encourage pupils to live our ethos of ‘give it a go and try your best’, supporting them to face and overcome challenges in all areas of their schooling and beyond.
Our three boarding houses – Beale, Thornfield and Cressbrook – are very much ‘home from home’ environments and our House Parents support and nurture our boarders, who provide the School with a unique family atmosphere. The Prep School's holistic approach to pastoral care aims to bring out the best in every child. We look to develop young people who are kind, responsible, creative, ambitious, collaborative and courageous – the values that make up our ‘Ways of the Wolf’ and guide the ethos of the entire Prep School.
