The Nursery and Junior School are situated adjacent to the Senior School in 33 acres of parkland on the southern outskirts of Newbury.
Our Nursery lies at the heart of St Gabriel’s and provides high-quality nursery care and Early Years education for children aged 6 months to 4 years. Open across 50 weeks a year and with an extended day, the Nursery has a warm and homely atmosphere where children become happy, confident and independent learners. As a natural progression, most of our Nursery children continue into the Reception class of the Junior School.
The co-educational Junior School offers a progressive and exciting learning environment. Subjects taught include English, Mathematics, Science, Art, Computing, Dance, Drama, Humanities (History, Geography), French, Music, Outdoor Education, PE, Religious Studies, Technology (Food Technology, Design Technology), Thinking Skills and PSHE.
Sport plays an important and integral role in the life of the school and there is a comprehensive fixtures list from Year 3. Sports offered include, Athletics, Basketball, Cricket, Cross-Country, Dance, Football, Gymnastics, Hockey, Netball, Rugby, Rounders and Tennis. Swimming takes place during the Summer Term in the outdoor heated swimming pool.
Music holds an equally high profile. In addition to curriculum Music lessons, there are numerous co-curricular music-making opportunities for all children with an interest in the subject. A large number of pupils learn instruments in school and there are many opportunities to perform in front of an audience, ranging from informal lunchtime recitals to major end of term concerts.
The broad and integrated curriculum designed to engage, excite and challenge young minds is balanced by an active enrichment programme. Taking pupils out of the classroom to participate in a wide variety of activities, including sport, the performing and creative arts, hobbies, visits and residential trips, enhances personal growth and achievement in the individual.
There is an excellent range of facilities, including a multi-discipline sports hall, theatre, dance studio, junior science laboratory, library, computing suites, orienteering courses and woodland trails.
Prospective pupils entering the Junior School in Year 1 and 2 are assessed by the class teacher; pupils entering Year 3 to 6 are assessed by the Individual Needs Department. Pupils applying for entry to Year 6 will also be assessed on their ability to pass the 11+ entrance examinations to the co-educational Senior School.
(For further information about the Senior School, see St Gabriel’s entry in Society of Heads.)
Charitable status. The St Gabriel Schools Foundation is a Registered Charity, number 1062748. It seeks to promote and provide for the advancement of education of the pupils at the school.
