St. Aubyn’s provides a well-rounded and dynamic approach to preparatory education, drawing from over 140 years of rich educational history. We balance tradition while embracing innovation, guided by our motto, Bravely, Faithfully, Happily. Pupils learn in an academic environment that nurtures curious minds, fosters academic boldness, and is building inclusive communities.
The School is non-selective at its main point of entry for children aged three. There are entry assessment tests for older children, principally at ages 4+ and 7+. Each educational department, Pre-Prep (including EYFS) and Prep, have a dedicated base and resources.
Classes are small, taught by well-qualified, dedicated staff. Pupils are also supported by learning support assistants. Two qualified School Nurses deal with all medical issues and emergencies, and the school’s provision includes a defibrillator.
Guided by the principle of Bravely, our priority is ensuring each pupil reaches their full academic potential while building a culture of inquiry and love of learning through a hands-on approach. Learning extends beyond the classroom, making full use of our wide-ranging facilities and the natural beauty of our eight-acre grounds. The curriculum encompasses a variety of subjects within a traditional framework, meeting all National Curriculum requirements. Enriching experiences, including school trips and visits from guest speakers and groups, further enhance our pupils' learning and development.
French, music and PE are taught by specialists from an early age, with increasing specialist-led subjects as pupils progress through the School. The Head of Music leads a thriving department with a school orchestra and various instrumental groups and choirs. Performances regularly take place both within and outside the School. Sport is central to the curriculum with games lessons including football, cricket, hockey, rugby, netball, athletics and swimming, ensuring all pupils achieve to the best of their ability.
Further guided by our mottos, Faithfully and Happily, we prioritise citizenship and wellbeing. Community initiatives, charitable activities, and Environmental Education facilitate collaboration amongst the vast school community. This expands into the local community ensuring a proactive involvement in shared responsibility.
Our holistic curriculum integrates art, music, drama, and dance, making them essential elements of the school and nurturing creativity and self-expression alongside academic and personal growth.
St. Aubyn’s pupils transition successfully to a variety of selective independent and state schools at age 11, often earning a range of scholarships. In 2024, a total of 38 awards were made where pupils were awarded scholarships in academics, music and sports.
All income from fees is dedicated entirely to the benefit of our pupils. We offer a means-tested assisted place scheme at 7+.
