Repton Prep is the 3–13 campus of Repton School, a co-educational boarding and day school providing an exceptional education for children aged 3 to 18 years. With over 400 pupils, around 40 of which board, the school offers a caring and inspirational environment with enviable facilities paired with excellent pastoral care. Repton Prep firmly believes that learning is a collaborative endeavour. There is a strong community of pupils, teachers and staff, and a united belief that the most valuable education is one that is broad, balanced and allows children to enjoy their childhood, while benefitting from a range of opportunities both in and out of the classroom. With a rich heritage and as part of Repton School, pupils enjoy a wealth of facilities and a plethora of resources, enabling a curriculum where academic excellence and an enriching co-curricular programme provides a rounded education. Set in the 55-acre grounds of a Palladian mansion, nestled in the glorious Derbyshire countryside with its own lake and woodland, what makes Repton Prep truly special is the team of dedicated teachers and staff; a highly experienced, gifted and committed community who strive for each child to develop a lifelong curiosity in the world. During their time at Repton Prep, children benefit from deep and nurturing relationships that motivate and inspire them to succeed.
Repton Prep is located two miles away from Repton School. Both campuses offer fantastic travel links and can be easily reached by road from the M1, M6 and M5 via the A50, by rail from East Midlands Parkway and Lichfield, or from nearby Birmingham and East Midlands airports.
Admission. Repton Prep welcomes applications for both boarding and day places throughout the academic year. Boarding is available from Year 3, and from that point of entry upwards, all candidates – day and boarding – will undergo an age-appropriate admissions process involving assessments, taster days and interviews. School reports and references will be obtained from their current school before formal offers are made.
Fees per term (2024-2025). Pre-Prep: £4,200–£4,660; Prep: Boarders £9,410–£11,115; Day £6,870–£8,590.
Curriculum. A varied curriculum with a breadth of subjects is offered to pupils. The Pre-Prep syllabus provides pupils with the skills and experiences that will form the foundation for their future learning, including the benefits of lessons taught by specialist teachers from an early age. The Prep curriculum builds on prior experience so that pupils become more independent and active learners. Teaching groups are streamed by ability with setting in place for Mathematics, English and French. This is designed to maximise the efficiency of teaching programmes and ensures that the work presented to pupils is ‘just right’.
In Year 8, pupils are prepared for entrance examinations or, if applicable, scholarship examinations. However, it is the aim of Repton to produce young pupils at 13 who are fully prepared for the senior phase of their education, as well as being a major contributor to society in their future lives beyond school.
Outdoor learning. Repton Prep’s setting plays no small part in the broader education of its pupils. Lessons spill out into the woods, spinneys, formal ponds or around the lake, as teachers take full advantage of the new Outdoor Classroom and Derbyshire countryside. During playtime, the youngest pupils have their own Teletubbies-style playground, with tunnels, blackboards and play equipment. Older pupils build dens, climb trees and explore the natural surroundings. Every experience at Repton Prep is seen as a learning opportunity.
Beyond Repton Prep. With Repton offering pupils an education from 3–18, 90% of leavers move on to Repton, with a number of pupils also receiving places at other highly acclaimed schools.
Facilities. Repton Prep is surrounded by 55 acres of woodland, playing fields and a lake. The School has a plethora of facilities including a striking purpose-built dining hall, three science laboratories, and a sophisticated computer technology suite. The Quad houses a contemporary Music facility, language laboratory, an Art department complete with kiln, a fully equipped DT classroom and a Greenpower garage for Repton Prep’s award-winning electric cars. An extensive library is situated in the main Hall, and there is an indoor competition-sized swimming pool, a sports hall and floodlit Astroturf. Pupils are fortunate to also have access to the world-class facilities at Repton School and shared resources across campuses.
Creative Arts. From Nursery onwards, all pupils are given the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of classroom and extracurricular music activities. The Music Department’s three full-time members of staff are supported by 20 specialist visiting music teachers offering over 200 lessons a week, and they work closely with the Director of Music at Repton School to deliver outstanding opportunities to pupils, from masterclasses to one-to-one tutorials with visiting musicians. Pupils are encouraged to take part in the School’s wide variety of ensembles and choirs and they have an enviable number of pupils who are part of regional and national orchestras and ensembles. The Drama department affords many opportunities for all pupils to design, direct and perform in the multiple productions that take place during the school year. Extracurricular activities include all aspects of theatre production including technical and backstage. Pupils are able to improve their confidence and love of performing without fear through LAMDA examinations. The personalised programme is tailored to individual needs and abilities from Year 3 upwards. Lessons are available within and outside of school hours. Repton Prep has enjoyed considerable success, with high uptake and consistently outstanding LAMDA examination results.
The Design and Technology Centre is home to a fully equipped workshop which enables pupils to develop a greater understanding of the real-world applications of Design Technology. It is the home of Greenpower, where pupils design, build and eventually race their own electric car.
Sport. Repton Prep recognises the importance of young people being involved in sport, whatever their ability and whatever their eventual chosen discipline. Pupils are actively encouraged to participate at the best level they can, and the aim is to equip every pupil with confidence and enthusiasm to enjoy sport and an active lifestyle both in school and beyond. Squads are fielded in the major sports of football, hockey and cricket for boys and girls, with second, third, fourth and even fifth teams formed. There is a wide range of different sporting opportunities from tennis, athletics, golf and kayaking to fencing and orienteering. The School also has its own equestrian team.
Houses. Day pupils join a House and, throughout the year, they can earn points by participating in various competitions, for positive behaviour and for special accomplishments. This not only fosters a sense of community but also forms an integral part of life at the School. Boarders are assigned a Boarding House and are welcomed into a warm, caring and fun environment, where they are looked after by Houseparents and the boarding staff team in a relaxed setting, where the emphasis is on enjoying a happy childhood.
Boarding. Boarding at Repton Prep is a highly rewarding experience; as well as developing lifelong friendships with people from all over the world, our boarders build a strong sense of self by immersing themselves in every opportunity that Repton Prep provides. There are four boarding houses, with two of these dedicated to flexi-boarding. Each House has its own relaxed atmosphere where children can be children, enjoying running around in the fresh air, playing games with their friends, reading, catching up with their favourite TV programme or simply chatting with friends and boarding tutors.
Bursaries may be available to families looking to access an independent education for their child, subject to means testing.
Charitable Status. Repton Prep (1093165) is a Registered Charity. Repton Prep exists to provide high-quality education for boys and girls.
