d’Overbroeck's is a leading co-educational independent school in Oxford, UK, offering an exceptional academic and extracurricular programme. We teach the GCSE, IGCSE and A Level curriculum to students aged 11–18 on three school sites: the Senior School, the Sixth Form and d'Overbroeck's International. We have mostly day students only at the Senior School, a mixture of boarding and day students in the Sixth Form, and mainly boarding at d'Overbroeck's International. A 2021 Independent Schools Inspectorate report rated us ‘Excellent’ across the board for academic achievement and personal development.
We have small classes so that every student gets the attention they need from our highly qualified teachers in a supportive and encouraging environment. Teaching is interactive to generate enthusiasm for the subject, sound academic skills, and effective working habits – while at the same time providing a thorough preparation for public examinations. We offer a caring, creative, nurturing and relatively informal environment where, no matter what a student’s interests are, they will find plenty of opportunities to explore. The range of opportunities on offer at d’Overbroeck’s is outstanding, so we encourage you to read on to find out more and visit our website.
Our school is high-achieving and academically rigorous, and students will receive expert guidance on how to make the most of their experience with us considering their long-term goals. We expect high standards of commitment and effort from our students and have a track record of strong GCSE and A Level results. Once enrolled at the school, our staff work closely with each student to make sure they are getting the advice and support they need. Pastoral care and support for each student is an essential feature at d’Overbroeck’s, where wellbeing and happiness are prioritised alongside responsibility and achievement.
Our Principal, Patrick Horne says:
‘As well as providing the expert teaching and support for academic success, we provide an array of excellent opportunities for students to develop their passions and explore new possibilities. There is no typical d'Overbroeck’s student or single experience here, and we value the distinctiveness of every person. Our exciting learning environment is characterised by a shared love of learning, with our brilliant teachers encouraging curiosity, innovation and compassion. The broad and fulfilling opportunities here ensure that students can build the skills, discipline and character needed for their futures, while also inspiring a lifelong love of learning.’
A brief description of the Senior School. This is the secondary school branch of the d’Overbroeck’s family of sites for students in year groups 7–11. It is co-educational, and also boasts a range of opportunities for students. Here you will find a broad range of GCSE subjects on offer, along with non-academic co-curricular activities, and pastoral care. We are Oxford’s only fully co-educational independent school from age 11 through to Sixth Form. Our aim is for every one of our students to meet his or her personal potential. That journey begins aged 11 in Year 7 (or aged 13 in Year 9 for those joining us from Prep schools), where this potential is identified, challenged and given every opportunity to grow. At the heart of our ethos is the knowledge and celebration of each of our students as an individual. Our consistently proven academic excellence comes as a result of this ethos, as does our community of students who are engaged, happy and at ease with themselves and their peers. d’Overbroeck’s has always been a place of positive relationships and shared purpose; a place where academic and extracurricular achievement, personal development and hearty laughter all come on the same wavelength.
A brief description of the Sixth Form. Students in the Sixth Form are aged 16–18 years of age. 35 A Level subjects are currently on offer, plus a comprehensive academic enrichment programme to stretch our students beyond the standard curriculum. Further to this, we offer a range of non-academic co-curricular activities for students to get involved in across drama, music, sport, and more, as well as a packed programme of trips, excursions, and regular social events. Many students at the Sixth Form choose to do an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) as part of their academic enrichment activities. The broad range of academic subjects that students can learn means that d’Overbroeck’s an ideal place for bright, ambitious students to achieve their full potential academically, but also a place they can thrive outside of the standard curriculum. The majority of students go on to university, and we have an excellent record of success with entry to Oxford and Cambridge, as well as prestigious medical, law, veterinary and art schools. We offer significant Higher Education and Careers support including application-writing advice and interview practice.
A brief description of d'Overbroeck's International. This part of the school is made up of students generally aged 14–16 years from all over the world, who choose to study with us in our vibrant and friendly school. We help students to prepare for academic success in the English education system on one of our IGCSE programmes, and in a small, caring atmosphere. Our specialist teachers will help students to improve their spoken and written English and teach them a full range of academic subjects. English as an Additional Language, non-academic co-curricular activities, TRACK (Theory of Research, Active Citizenship and Knowledge), and Sixth Form and University Progression are just some of the options available to international students who join us. Students will receive pastoral care throughout their time with us, to make sure they receive the support they need academically and in their co-curricular pursuits. Students coming from abroad will be warmly welcomed and there are opportunities for them to mix with British students through activities that interest them. Trips and excursions relating to British heritage are also on offer, allowing students to learn more about British culture and history.
Main entry points to the school are: at ages 11, 13 and directly into the Sixth Form aged 16 following GCSE exams.
