Each year, the College offers an inspiring array of educational opportunities through its scholarship programme, allowing talented pupils to achieve distinction and recognition for personal excellence in their chosen field.
Each scholarship has designated scholar leads and senior tutors who are experts in their field, with a wealth of experience in both academic and pastoral positions.
Scholarship candidates should have a love of their chosen subject, showing this throughout the assessment process and at interview. They should be keen to promote their field within the College, and encourage others to enjoy the subject too, setting an example of excellence for their peers.

There is no ‘one size fits all’ approach at Clifton College Preparatory School, a friendly and inspiring co-educational boarding and day school for pupils aged 8-13. Each child is considered and treated as an individual with a unique profile of skills, passions, talents and undiscovered potential. Clifton College offers a stimulating and challenging curriculum, which combines traditional methods with programmes of study relevant to the needs of the next century.
Clifton College Preparatory School aims to provide the highest possible standard of education, and to help pupils develop the key skills of literacy and numeracy, as well as observation, information-seeking, posing questions and problem-solving. In addition, we aim to develop their ability to co-operate and work productively with others, as well as to work and learn independently.
A wide range of subjects are studied, and pupils are supported and encouraged to become high achievers across the varied curriculum. Small class sizes, first-class facilities and teaching excellence enables pupils to aim high, reaching their academic potential, and beyond.
The vast majority of pupils move through to the Upper School, but those who choose to move elsewhere are prepared for, and often win, scholarships to other schools.
As part of Clifton College, the Preparatory School benefits from being governed by the same Council and enjoys the considerable advantages of sharing many of Clifton College’s impressive facilities. These include the Redgrave Theatre, Indoor Swimming Pool, Gymnasium, Squash and Rackets Courts, and over 90 acres of playing fields off-site at Beggar’s Bush. This comprises a new state-of-the-art sports complex at the Beggar’s Bush site officially opened in September 2024. ‘The Chellaram Sports Complex’, features a multi-purpose floor that accommodates three netball courts, three tennis courts, twelve badminton courts, three basketball courts or ten cricket lanes. Additionally, the complex includes a bouldering wall, an indoor hockey pitch, space for touch rugby and several table tennis areas. The sports hall has been designed to have a much-reduced energy consumption, meeting current energy efficiency and sustainability standards including BREEAM Excellent. The School has its own impressive Science laboratories, Arts Centre, ICT suites, Music facilities and Chapel.
There are six Houses in the Prep School, three day Houses for Years 4-6, two day Houses for Years 7-8, and a boarding House for Year 4 upwards. Pupils benefit from a supervised environment where they can meet, work or relax, and provides a true home away from home. Each House is led by a Housemaster/Housemistress and their spouse, along with Tutors, Matrons and the occasional House dog.
The excellent and well-rounded co-curricular programme encourages children to try something new, find new interests, and to engage with the world around them - boosting their confidence and self-esteem.
The youngest pupils (aged 3–8) learn next door at the Pre-Preparatory School, under the care of their own teachers. (See separate IAPS entry for Clifton College Pre-Preparatory School.)
