The College was founded in commemoration of a visit of Her Majesty Queen Victoria to the Island and opened in 1852. It bears the Arms of Jersey and the visitor is Her Majesty The Queen.
There are currently 680 boys in College and 275 in the Preparatory School.
The College is situated in extensive grounds above St Helier and commands spectacular views south and west over the Bay of St Aubin.
The fine building of 1852, with its Great Hall, de Quetteville Library and administrative areas, is set at the centre of new teaching accommodation, including classrooms, a music centre, an extensive Science suite opened by Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, a Sixth Form Centre, Art and Design Technology suite, computer suites and the Howard Davis Theatre, refurbished in 1996 and updated in 2019. A suite of 4 new English classrooms were finished in 2014 along with a new Sixth Form Centre. House rooms (now Year Group rooms) were added in 2015.
College Field is adjacent to the main buildings and includes an all-weather hockey pitch.
Located in the grounds is a 25-yard shooting range, squash courts and CCF Headquarters. A multimillion pound sports complex with swimming pool was opened in 2003.
Education. There is a strong focus on adding value in all aspects of educational provision. The Combined Cadet Force, The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and a wide-ranging co-curricular programme helps provide opportunities for all students, catering to all interests and skill levels. Academic excellence, focusing on supporting students to achieve their personal academic bests, is a core goal. The curriculum conforms to the requirements of the Jersey Curriculum. From September 2022 at GCSE, students study English Language and Literature, Mathematics and at least two Science subjects from Biology, Chemistry and Physics. They also select from Spanish, French, History, Drama, Geography, an additional Science, Music, Art, Computer Science, DT, Food & Nutrition, Sports Science and Classical Civilisation. Boys select their optional subjects from those which best suit their aspirations, passions and abilities, the choice being guided by teaching staff in consultation with students and parents.
Boys study three A Level subjects (from a choice of 23) suited to their interests and future career options. Students from 3 other collaboration schools on Island share provision at Key Stage 5, to widen the choice of subjects available, and students visit other schools for those lessons. A wide ranging Sixth Form enrichment programme is offered, including lecture series and careers programme, Extended Project Qualification, and a significant number of options, many of which carry formal qualifications outside of the traditional academic sphere (e.g. sports coaching).
Prizes. Her Majesty The Queen gives three Gold Medals annually for Science, Modern Languages and Mathematics as well as two Prizes for English History. The States of Jersey offers a Gold Medal and a Silver Medal annually for French.
Physical Education and Games. Sport is enjoyed and promoted across all Key Stages at the College, and consistent success in both on and off Island competitions is the norm. Many students represent the Island in chosen sports.
Winter games include Association Football, Rugby, Hockey and Squash. Summer games include Cricket, Swimming, Shooting, Tennis and Athletics. Matches are played against Elizabeth College, Guernsey and numerous English Independent Senior Schools.
Combined Cadet Force. The College has an excellent CCF Contingent with an establishment of approximately 135 across three sections: Army, Navy and RAF. It is commanded by Sqn Ldr S Blackmore.
Admission. The age of admission is 11 years though boys are considered for entry at all ages. Entrants that do not come directly from the associated Victoria College Preparatory School must pass the College Entrance Examination.
Fees per term (2024-2025). £2,704. A grant is payable by the States of Jersey to supplement fees.
Preparatory School. The College has its own Preparatory School which stands in the College grounds. Boys progress to the College at the age of 11. (For further details see entry in IAPS section). Leaving Scholarships. There are a number of Scholarships for further education (of varying amounts). The Queen's Exhibition is tenable for three years at certain Universities; the Wimble Scholarship, the Sayers Scholarships and the De Lancey and De La Hanty Scholarship, tenable at British Universities, and the Rayner Exhibitions are recent additions to the rich endowment of Scholarships enjoyed by the College for its students.
